Hey ya'll,

I ended up with pretty much a full parts kit for an M4...so I'll go ahead and just put it together. This will just be a fun gun/range toy for the kid, so no need to drop big coin on a rifle that I could take or leave.

The kids know their fundamentals (Iron Sights), but they really like red dots. So I'd like to put a red dot sight on the rifle, but I just see no reason to spend more than $100 on a red dot.

SOOOO.... What do ya'll recommend for a red dot on the cheap? Yeah sure, I could buy some $20 POS, but I'd like something that will survive being dropped or something like that.

So what do you gentlemen (and Ladies) recommend for this job?

The Bushnell TRS-25 is decent for a cheap red dot, otherwise spend a little more for a Primary Arms or Vortex

TRS-25 or primary arms

I'd buy a Primary Arms Micro or Advanced Micro if you up your budget a bit. I have a PA Advanced Micro and it is a great red dot

Thanks for the quick responses.

What is the general opinion of the "hive mind" on this one from Primary Arms: https://www.primaryarms.com/pa30mmrd-ad

I think the kids would feel very comfortable with that because I have another rifles in my collection with an Aimpoint M68 CCO (Comp M2) that they know well and like very much.

Is this one worth consideration?

I got a Wolverine CSR for around $85 when they came out.

Very impressed so far.

Primary Arms is almost always the default answer but check into Holosun and Sig Romeo5. I recently got a Romeo5 and I am very impressed with it. They are being sold for the $100 range as well right now.

Came here to suggest the Bushnell TRS-25. Very hard to beat for the price. It is simple, no frills, but works. Can't leave it on or it will eat batteries, but as long as you remember to turn it off, it serves extremely well for all but duty or home defense where lives are on the line.

Romeo 5 is what you seek.

I bought one...took it out and sighted it in and came home and immediately ordered two more. Great RD for the price. Has the long battery life and the motion-activated on/off feature.

Looking back should have placed seperate orders though, could have got double the discount

I put a Romeo 5x on a plinker-upper and have had consistent results with it in a QD mount.

Not that your kid will be doing torture tests with it, and not every RDS will hold up to this abuse, but it should hold up to all weather plinking at least:

Alabama Arsenal torture test

I'd get a Vortex Sparc AR or the crossfire. You can find the Sparc in the EE for right around $100.

Yes, I have one and while it’s no Aimpoint it’s still a very good optic for range use.

Note that if they have astigmatism then you may notice a bit more blooming with it than the Aimpoint.

I bought one of these for a plinker/fun gun. Very well made. An American company and I believe they are made in the USA. Great reviews and I understand why:

That said...at 47.99 the Bushnell TRS-25 is one heckuva deal:

If you go with the Bushnell on Amazon, you may want one of these (or a 1" version depending how you want to co-witness your front sight):

Romeo 5, Primary Arms, or TRS-25. TRS-25 being the cheapest of the three. Vortex Crossfire I hear is decent but is a little bit more than 100$ (140ish on Opticsplanet w/ 5% coupon)

Take a look at the Tru Glo Tru-Tec red dots. They appear to be a re-branded Holosun.

Fyi I recently had to return 2 Bushnell trs25. The old ones were amazing, the new ones are hit or miss. If you want a RDS equal to the old trs25 check out the new at3 tactical with riser/outer rubber armor/lense covers.

@Capt_Destro
What issues did you have with the TRS 25s?
Vanishing red dots (models with certain emitters)
Adjustment knob was off a number.
Tube inside was looking lop sided/obstructed view when centered.
Adjustment Knob had a looseness to it and red dot flicked during recoil or if knob was wiggled.

The one I purchased around 2012 was a tank. The newer ones feel alot cheaper in terms of materials and quality control.

I feel like I'm gambling whenever I order one. Make sure the store has an excellent return/exchange policy if you are dead set on a trs25
