I need to remove the factory free float tube from my LR 308 so I can install a new tube with rails. Question is: how to remove? Looks like the new one has 3 pieces. Tube, barrel nut, and locking collar but all I can see on the original is the tube and barrel nut (looks like the barrel nut is part of the tube?) I wamted to get some info before I start wrenching on it. I'm sure somebody out here has done this before.

TIA

the tube is screwed onto the bbl nut. you'll need the upper in a vice, and a strap type (like and oil filter wrench) you unscrew the tube in the normal direction. it is locktite'd on so it will take some force.

Use a heat gun to warm the tube at the threads and it will come off easier.

Because they like to use Loctite. Fortunately just blue, though.

I was thinking more on the lines of thermal expansion.

Look closely at the factory FFT. There is a seam between the barrel nut and tube about 1.5 inches from the end closest to the receiver.

guess I'll get my heat gun out and hope for the best. I bought this new tube from DPMS. Anybody know if it will line up with the rail on top of the receiver?

I've removed several dpms handgaurds.  When they've used loctite, i've had to use a propane torch to get them off the barrel nut.  Not just a little either, had to get them skin searing hot before they'd move.  The anodizing must be great cause I've never left a permnant mark on one.
