I just purchased a used DPMS 16" lightweight carbine, model A-15.
The lower receiver is marked: CAL 223-5.56 but the barrel only says CAL 223.
I have read that some DPMS rifle should not use the Winchester Q3131A,
while others are OK with it. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?
All my blasting ammo is Q3131A.
Thanks, Seth

DPMS,has 223 on their barrels, but actually it is really chambered for 556.
This is the only barrel manufactor, that does it like that.

I own a special run of DPMS/CMMG barrel with chromed lined barrel and chamber.
Also it made of 4150 steel and has 1/7 twist and M4 feed ramps.

I'd check with DPMS to be sure. They still sell some .223 only barrels, so if they marked it .223, it's probably a .223 barrel.

My DPMS M4 profile barrel is marked 5.56 as are most of their 5.56 barrels.

My one and only DPMS barrel is .223 and it just malf'd today while firing SB SS109. It will shoot .223 reliably all day long and is very accurate.

Would I get another?

No.

I think their a link floating around here, reguarding ammo, their is a statement reguarding the markings on DPMS barrels, the artical says that DPMS marked barrels with 223,but chambered for 556.

So far, I have ran every type of ammo, including wolf ammo, no problemss what so ever.

I'll see, if I can find that link, it has been awhile.

PS: this only reguard the chromed lined barrel, not sure about the none chromed lined DPMS barrels.

Typical Colt Mil-Spec-type markings: C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7

Typical Bushmaster markings: B MP 5.56 NATO 1/9 HBAR

DPMS marks their barrels ".223", though they actually have 5.56 chambers.

Olympic Arms marks their barrels with "556", with some additionally marked "SS" or "SUM." This marking is used on all barrels, even older barrels that used .223 chambers and current target models that also use .223 chambers. Non-target barrels made since 2001 should have 5.56 chambers.

Armalite typically doesn't mark their barrels. A2 and A4 models had .223 chambers until mid-2001, and have used 5.56 chambers since. The (t) models use .223 match chambers.

Rock River Arms uses the Wylde chamber specs on most rifles, and does not mark their barrels.

Most other AR manufacturers' barrels are unmarked, and chamber dimensions are unknown.

How current is that information? The most recent DPMS catalog lists their models as having a .223 chamber OR a 5.56 chamber depending on the model. The race, bull barrel, Arctic Panther, Tuber, CMP, and Lo-Pro Classic models are listed as having .223 chambers and the rest are listed as having 5.56 chambers.

I would suggest contacting DPMS to be sure what it's actually chambered for.

I agree with Stasher1 about contacting DPMS to make sure.

Most likely their "match-type" are .223, but better to be safe than sorry.

My Classic A2's barrel (purchased Oct 2002) is marked .223, but DPMS Cust Svc assured me it is 5.56, and I've never experienced any issues firing XM193, XM855 or Q3131A.

That's funny, I've got a DPMS LoPro and it's marked on the lower 223-5.56 So I called DPMS and talked to them in person and they said it's 5.56. I shoot only 5.56 out of it and it works just fine.
