Is a crush washer even needed on this particular flash hider? If not, does it just butt up directly to the barrel?

No, a crush washer is not used. It spins on w/out orientation, and self-tightens.

No washer snug it up and done.

What if on a 14.5 inch barrel? It doesn't HAVE to self tighten does it? It's ok to tighten/pin weld before shooting?

I believe the vortex will be long enough without the crush washer, if it's not then by all means use the washer, it won't hurt it. The crush washer is generally used to keep time the FH and keep it tight, but if your going to blind pin it then no worries about tightness. You'll definently want it welded on before you go shooting unless it's and SBR or pistol upper or else you *may* run into problems with the law.

Yeah, all of what js308 said.

'Have to' ? It just does, it self tightens as you shoot so you don't need to gorilla it on the barrel, but if you are putting it on a barrel with a finished OAL that doesn't exceed 16" without the vortex you have to weld or pin it anyway. (Unless it's a registered SBR).
