I am not here to debate the best of the best but since I am a newbie and going to be purchasing a new AR15, can both colt and bushmaster shoot both calibers?

On colt's website they say 5.56 and on bushmasters website they say .223.

So can both shoot both calibers or not???

Looking to either get a LE Colt if I can find one or the Bushmaster M4 type with the izzy flash suppressor.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Most of bushmaster's rifles, including the one you are looking at, are chabered for 5.56mm NATO.

Both can shoot both calibers- they're the same essentially, except 5.56mm has higher pressure than standard SAMMI .223.

The two calibers aren't exactly the same. There are slight differences between the two calibers.

Its my understanding that trying to shoot a 5.56 round from a .223 chamber can be done but its not neccessarily a good thing to do because the 5.56 is a higher pressure round and you might have some reliabilty problems due to the tolerances the tighter tolerances of the .223 chamber.

Go to ammo oracle for more info.

Yes.. you can shoot either cartridge interchangably. They are actually different chambers with a  technically different spec, but it is pretty suttle. Same same as with 308 win and 7.62x51

I'd shoot a .223 or 5.56 through a 5.56 barrel.

I don't shoot 5.56 through a .223 barrel.

Ok I am not sure what the bushmasters come with.  Their website doesn't specify.  I see that colt says on the website 5.56 and doesn't even mention .223.

I want to be able to shoot both calibers if in a jam.  Brand new out of the box does anyone know if bushmasters are 5.56 fully complient?

Both Bushmaster and Colt take 5.56, and you can also fire .223 out of them.

My bushy is marked .223-5.56 on the lower receiver and the barrel is marked 5.56 nato

The Bushmaster you're looking at will shoot .223 Remington and 5.56 mm ammunition.  The Bushmaster manual lists the weapon's caliber as ".223 Remington / 5.56 mm".

Also.. just because it is stamped .223 does not mean it is really a .223 chamber, or vice versa with .556 . Part of this is marketing, and the other part is simply not caring. Also each have at least 3 different reamer dimensions as far as leade, throat angle, length of throat,  with some degree of overlap.

Do not lose any sleep over this with AR type rifles, theres actually more of a concern with the ammo being loaded to the proper spec than with chambers.

Happen to be fortunate, B Obermeyr lives around the corner and we shoot together, and J Kreiger is
also a shooting friend.

Seems like Colt says .223 on their website too?
