Will a colt upper work with all of the lower recievers?

Depends on when it was made, and who it was made for; the military or the civie market.

Up until a few years ago, Colt uppers (and lowers) for the civilian market had a front hinge screw that was larger in diameter than the .25 inch hinge pins that the military, and everyone else, used. They only went to the standard .25 inch, when they started making the hammer/trigger pins larger.

If you do have a large pin upper, it can be used on a current lower by installing a little sleeve type piece from DPMS, that costs about $3.
