a scope like this?....without the mount?

I guess you could get a cheap chinese copy and steal the mount off of it (probably won't be able to use the chinese phillips head screws though) and throw the "scope" away and not be out much

Question: When the mounting screws are removed does all the nitrogen leak out of the scope?

I just got a clone so that I could use the carry handle mount on an Armalite 2.75x20 scope.  The transplant will be delayed until I know more about the nitrogen leaky thingy.

most of the clones I've seen use phillips heads screw instead of slotted screws that the Colt scopes had

Here's a real 3x20.  The screws go into the scope body and I've no clue is they penetrate the scope tube or not.  Never seen one without the base.

Ahhh Chuck, not trying to bust your bubble, but that is a Made in Japan 3x20 scope. The "real" 3x20 scope was made in the US and marked so on the top and came in a red box.And even those were NOT actually made by Colt. They were made by Realist for Colt.Check scope section in RBR to view.

I believe that's considered a late 3x scope that was "made in japan" but was distributed by Colt  ...so I guess it comes down to your definition of "real", as mentioned Colt didn't make any of 'em. The one I have is even later and has the stylized Colt logo but I consider it "real" and correct for an early to mid eighties firearm such as my SP1 carbine

They're all good, that is a nice scope.

Left to right:  Made in USA, early Japan made, later Japan made and even later Japan made:
