Almost embarrassed to ask but has anyone tried one of the cheap Colt copy scopes that mount on the carry handle?
Would I just be throwing away money?

Yes. I have. Yes. You would be. Mine works well enough that I am not tempted to offer it to you at a great price, but if I had it to do again I would spend the extra money and get the real deal. When I buy a Colt, then I'll dump the Leapers. The biggest difference between the two (if the Leapers doesn't break) is the thickness of the crosshairs. My leapers' crosshairs looks like they were drawn on with eyelash thickner.

I've tried both the 21mm and 28mm versions. The 28mm version is much better than the 21mm version. Either are suitable for plinking. The slighlty more expensive 28mm version allows more light, had better adjustments (discrete clicks,) and a better mount (doesn't need LockTite). See reviews of both these optics (and more) at http://www.MD-AR15.com in the Product Reviews section.
