I'd like for an early m-16 ish AR, but it's just for fun and I don't really want to track down, and pay for, a real one. Am I wasting my time with the knock offs?

Keep an eye open in the E n’ E Optics section. I’ve seen the real Colt Scopes every so often in there at decent prices. From what I’ve read here on the boards over the last few years the copies are junk.
