How did you date the serial number?

I have one dated in 1972 as well (small world!) and yes...mine has the birdcage as well. I'm considering swapping it out for the duckbill one, though, for asthetic purposes only. |

I had made some updates to mine like the round handguards, A2 pistol grip, A2 rear apeature, square front sight post and A2 FS. But I started thinking and I wanted to return it to basically stock look. The only thing I have not changed back is the sights. I put the originals in the butt stock. I purchased the rifle for oldest son.
