Updated post, thanks guys.

One thing you might check, especially if you are going to take it apart and check for a "C" on the extractor, take a look at the extractor spring, old ones are five coil, newer ones are four coil with a buffer.  Buffers were first white, then red.  Don't think blue were used in the SP1?

YardDogOne, that is the first barrel I have heard of with two MP markings.  Normally a barrel like that would have a "12" or a "C" rather then a second MP by the flash suppresor.  Very interesting.

yes very interesting, so interesting in fact I had to go back and check, says 12 not MP, as do my notes, must have lost something in the translation

sorry 'bout that

I have seen some inaccuracies in previous online charts.

The Colt R6001 I personally bought NIB in late Nov. 1982 was s/n SP1730xx.

Upper marked "CM" below the rear sight.

Left side roll markings:

COLT'S FIREARMS DIVISION
COLT INDUSTRIES
HARTFORD, CONN.
U.S.A.

Barrel marks:  C MP CHROME BORE
FSB:  right side, "C" near top, "bell" on lower area.

Found the pictures of number 5 in the archive, was anymore ever posted on it? A right side photo would have been great. I wonder if it was assembled in 1963 or 1966. I examined SP1 SP00232 at a gun show some years ago (1990’s). Gun had been sold from the factory shortly before I examined it, had a dated Colt bill of sale. It had many later SP1 parts, notched carrier, fire control, stocks etc... You may have seen SP00231 on Gunbroker.com last year, advertised with incorrect parts or were they?  Seems like Colt may have held some receivers and assembled them at a latter date. Or maybe even updated rifles that never left the factory.  An SP1 database is a great idea, I too have thought of starting one over the years. An online from would be a great way to collect data, have any ever been done here?

You got the same pics I have, no right side view.  The next guy that bought it did not share any pictures publicly.  I don't think the serial number was used out of order, judging from the bolt group alone.

All the information I have points to just one SP1 built in 1963, that being GX4968.

Yes, saw 00231 on Gunbroker, it is included in the above data base.  It did have updated parts, not sure on why.  The why is always tough, prefer to stick with what, rather then why, if you know what I mean?  GX4968 also had a bunch of parts swapped out on it, seems this happened prior to leaving the factory.

An SP1 database is a great idea, I too have thought of starting one over the years. An online from would be a great way to collect data, have any ever been done here?

This one and your old one are the only ones I have ever seen.  Other then the serial number charts. Oh yeah, and BRII has quite a bit of SP data.

Well, lets see if I help any.
SP1
SER.SP1812XX
Large hole pivot
Slab side lower
Hammer has "C" in circle and a 6 or 9 in circle with FP cutout.
Also has the shorter disconector

M16 style upper. No FA. or BD
C  M on upper and the usual square and triangle between the ejection port and barrel

20" barrel with C MP chrome bore on it.
Front site has a "B1" in diamond
Bird cage flash hider

bolt carrier has an unshrouded FP with full circle in rear. C stamped with FA notches.
bolt has etched MPC, ejector has either 3 or 4 coils with white buffer.

When I purchased this rifle I was told by the original owner that it was a 1979. I have my doubts, but during the ban, I knew this was a pre-ban due to the slab side lower. Thats all I was looking for.

That chart is good. Matches the one in R.L. Wilson's Colt Heritage.

Mine is SP163xxx

Came with A1 flash suppressor; I put the 3-prong on it when I bought the rifle new.

Black paint on lower left and front of mag well. Appears to have come from factory.
