I have the oportunity to buy a secondhand Colt SP1 AR15, originally bought in 1985, for a cheap price.
It's been hardly used and looks very good.
Is this a good rifle or rather old?
This would be my first AR15. Is it also possible to replace pistolgrip, handguard on this gun?

There is only one small setback, the cover spring is missing. I presume this can be easily ordered somewhere en place it myself.

How cheap?

If it is less than a grand its good. You can change ANYTHING you want on it, your imagination is the limit. And yes, replacement parts are incredibly easy to find. Edited to say: 500??? wtf!!!! buy it now.

Well, the Colt SP1 AR15 has no forward assist on the lower receiver. Is this necessary? All later models seem to have it. And in my opinion it looks good on the gun, gives some more presence. But I know no people who have ever used it, so it's more decorative I think. Is the absence of this forward assist a reason to skip this offer and look for a model with it?

Well, did ya get it? That is one heck of a deal. If you don't want it, Ill buy it. As for the forward assist, it is not really needed in a non military weapon, it was a battle field solution for a dirty chamber. Both the cover spring and pistol grip can be replaced for next to nothing ($10.00 for both).

I was thinking the same thing. That price is a steal just for the rifle, never mind the Aimpoint. Nice rig by the way Coyote [:)]

Can I put a First Samco/Fobus M44 fullsize hanguard on the Colt SP1 AR15 (20") instead of the triangular handguard? And a CAR15 telescoping stock?

500 bucks for any colt AR in good condition is a great deal. Just buy it. Worry about chaning things later. Like us, you will have a room full of spare parts from different phases and kicks you will go through.

Well, I bought it. Now I'm thinking about to "update" the looks a bit. With a CAR15 telescoping stock and such M44 handguard set if possible. 2 things I can reasonably easy do on my own I think. But is it possible to replace the original triangular handguards with the Fobus M44 large size?

Great deal for a Colt AR15, congrats. The handguards are interchangeable.

I'm fairly new here, but isn't that rifle a collectors item that should be kept in original condition?

Collectors model? You only live once enjoy it! That's the best part of ARs you can trick them out or leave them plain. Have fun!!!! BobK

just make sure that you keep all of the original parts in case you do modify it.

If you happen to be insane and decide not to go for this once-in-a-lifetime oppertunity, send my the dealers information PLEASE, and I'll buy it and have him transfer it to my FFL. I HIGHLY suggest you get it yourself though. But SERIOUSLY, If you don't buy it I want it! Edited to add: I just read that you bought it...Congrats, you're going to have oodles of fun! You bastard! Can I replace the handguard and the stock with a CAR15 collapsible buttstock myself or best done by a gunsmith? And any special tools or wrench necessary?
Link Posted: 10/31/2003 10:10:35 AM EST
You can change the stock yourself, the only problem will be getting the rifle length buffer tube off. Since its probably never been off the rifle before, it'll take some effort and make sure you don't try to twist it the wrong way or you could damage the receiver. The handguard plate behind the front sight needs to be changed to a round one for the M44 handguards to fit. The triangular one won't work with anything but triangle handguards. Hope this helps!

Niko, perhaps if the AR was New-In-the-Box it could be a collectors item. This SP1 is clearly used and the SP1 is not really rare. 5sub

I'm thinking of getting me a 16" upper and place it on the SP1 lower and also replacing the butttstock with a collapsible buttstock. How do I remove the old and install the new collapsible buttstock? Do I need spacers, special tool or something? If possible I would like to switch from time to time between the orginal SP1 20" look and a 16" with collapsible buttstock look :)
