I have heard that it is prone to breakage. Mine broke at the roll pin that holds it in place. Is this where the part usually breaks? I have read many discussions about possible fixes. Is there any one fix that has been  proven to alleviate this?

Yes, that's where it always breaks.  Brownells sells genuine Colt stops, and if you get one of Slash's Q buffers it won't happen again.
