This exact question has been asked quite often, and it comes down to what type of ammo you shoot, and if you care about the extra weight of a heavy barrel.

Thanks Stickman.  (btw: You take some amazing photos, what do you use? 35mm? Digital SLR? medium format?)

Anyways....is the weight difference that substantial?  I normally shoot fmj 55grain.

Here is what I THINK I know about them:

6920 has bigger m4 style HG's
6721 has the smaller ones

6721 has the m16 bolt
6920 has ?? bolt

6920 has the m4 barrel
6721 has the heavy barrel

both 6920 and 6721 has m4 feedramps.

other than that, I dont know of any other differences.  Do you have any experience with either?

The 6920 would be my first choice. I have both, the 6920 is a bit lighter and has a faster twist to stabilize heavier ammo if need be.

Either of the new ones should come with the M16 Bolt carrier.

Both are great carbines. For the same price I would go 6920. If it were me though I would get a Bushy Patrolman and about $300 worth of ammo. Hey wait that is what I did

Ditto!  In the end the bushy and the 6271 or w/e it is are equal in every respect exceot that the Bushmaster's cosmetics are 1000x better.

I was getting them for about $150 more then a Bushy when I got mine. The only thing I did not get was the free kinked FSB. It was worth it to me at the time. They are to high now [$1300] for me to buy anymore, if you can find one.

So the 6721 true HBar including under the handguards and the 6920 has a standard (non-SoCom) M4 barrel?

The 6721 is heavy under the handguards. The 6920 is not.

Personally,  of the two I would go with the 6920.  Unless you plan on doing any full auto firing the HBar isn't necessary and the 1:7 barrel stablizes the 75 and 77 grain ammo better, generally.  Therefore you can use 75gr and 77gr whoop-ass for HD/SHTF/CQB.

I have both. I tend to like the smaller handguards better, the 1:9 is a great compromise and with my testing seems to group the heavy bullets as well as the 1:7. The 203 relief is kinda corny for a non military weapon but seems to be the "Hot ticket" right now. All in all I like the heavy barrel better. It really comes down to if you want the M4 look or heavy barrel.

You will be happy with either,
D.

Probably not what what you're looking for but, I'd choose the 6920. For no other reason than I simply like the M4 look.

Yup.

The 6920 has a fully chrome lined barrel and M4 feed ramps.  The hand guards are bigger and double shielded too.  I think the 6721 is only chromed in the chamber and has those wimpy little hand guards.  Plus the heavy barrel profile of the 6721 takes away from the "carbine" standard.  It's suppose to be light weight and handy.

Hi Instante, I too had to decide between the two models, and after much study, thought & opinions, I opted for the M-6721.  It was an extremely tough decision for me to make, but I finally decided to go with the 6721's full length heavy bbl as opposed to the 6920's M4 type. Why the heavy bbl ? Because as my primary CQB & medium range MBR, I wanted the he heavy bbl to reduce the chances of overheating when used for supressive fire & extended dhooting sessions. In my experience, even semi-auto AR-15's will become quite hot when fired rapidly & for extended peiods of time. My beautiful little Colt 6520 is one of my favorites, but will become very hot when run fast & hard, even though it's only a semi-auto weapon. When you compare the weight difference between the 6721 & 6920, I recall that it's only a half pound or so, all in the bbl. The additional features of the 6920 can be added to a 6721 in approximately 5 or so mins. ( Re: Larger, M4 handguards & side-sling swivel ) The M203 cut on the 6920's bbl is useless for a civilian, other than perhaps being utilized to mount an accessory, which can also be mounted on a good rail system, which many users will choose to install anyway. Many folks claim the 6920 just plain balances & "feels" better than the 6721. Well, they may have a point there. To some, the 6721 may feel "front heavy", & a bit out of balance. To others, they claim that the added weight stabilizes it better during rapid fire, and is more accurate than the M4 style. As in many things, it just may come down to a matter of opinion. If at all possible, you should try to handle both models, and decide which one feels better to YOU. As I said before, I chose the 6721's heavy bbl for a distinct purpose, but for your particular needs the lighter M4 profile may be just right.  Good luck with your decision, I hope my 2 cents worth has helped. Regards,   dpast32

I bought a 6721 first and then the 6920.  I like both a lot but if I could do it over, I'd buy the 6721 and then a 6921.

I would suggest the LE6920

A bit lighter than the 6721, has a more versatile 1/7 barrel, and is as close to our military's M4 as a civilian can get without registration under the NFA.

It is one awesome AR15, and one you surely could treasure for a lifetime.

We have two 6721s in the family.  One is a trunk gun for duty.  I also have a LMT M-4 profile.  I prefer the heavier barrel.  Don't assume all Colts will have a M16 carrier.  It depends on when it was made.   Both of ours have half circle bolts, factory MPI Colts.

Either model would be a good choice except it's up to you which feature is more important to you, heavier barrel or a lighter barrel and what ammo you like to use.

I picked the 6721 myself because I liked the roll marks of "AR-15A3 Tactical Carbine" and I was planning to change the barrel anyway.

I changed my HBAR barrel with a mid-length gas system, mid-weight profile, 1/7 twist, chrome lined, M4 feed ramps which is Denny's Guns/ GTS Operator barrel.

Now my 6721 have the smoother action of the mid-length gas system, 1/7 twist for heavy ammo, slightly heavier profile than the M4 but lighter than HBAR but still have good heat resistance.
