I am working on a project and need to know if the q3131a or m855 can go through 3/8 to 1/2" steel at say 75 to 100 yards? Im woring on a resetting target and do not need the bullet to travel through the metal. What thinkness would be needed to do that at that distance?

You didn't say what kind of steel. That makes a big difference. In any case, I'd wager that the M855 WILL pass through it, and at the least it would beat the hell out of it.

well what steel would you recomend for m855 not to go through it. And at what thickness?

I said that so if I am able to make it I can have something that will not fall apart. There are other guns out there that are more powerful than the Ar and Id be building them for all rounds. I understand that its not going to hold up to a 50bmg but the stronger I can make it the better!

HunterShooter.com has steel targets for sale fairly cheap. They claim to stop any centerfire rifle round. I asked if this means FMJ, too, they said yes. They said that AP ammo is recommended against, but that it will stop FMJ, even if it is steel jacketed. [url]http://www.huntershooter.com/catalog[/url]

I have a section of I-beam that I shoot at on occasion. It is 3/8" thick. It looks like Swiss Cheese. I doubt that bridges and overpasses are built using the hardest steel, but I would go for somthing as thick and hard as practical. Most real gongs I have shot at are more than 1/2" thick and have extra reinforcement behind the centers. I don't know what kind of steel is usually recommended for this.

Steel targets are usually made out of special steel. They are usually very expensive. At the Practical Rifle matches I go to, any metal content in the bullets is prohibited as it will chew up the very expensive targets.

After some google searching, it appears to me that metal rifle targets are made from steel with a 500 Brinell hardness rating. Most steel you'll find to make the target out of will be the softer steel. I have made several attempts to make a target that will hold up to the abuses of a group shoot and all have failed. First I went with a 1/2" steel plate at 100yards 24"x18" leaned up against a burm. Results were that Q3131A will not penetrate it first shot, most of the time M855 wont either but 2 shots in the same vicinity will penetrate, I'll bring it out this Saturday so you can see it. The second target was made with 1" steel about 8"x8". I made a stand out of 4x4 steel stock(hollow), split in half, some simple welding and I was done. Results were that after about 50 rounds or so my weld failed. You gotta keep in mind that there is a TON of pressure when the bullet impacts the target, more than you might think. My welds were too cool so next time I'll crank up the welder and really get them in there. I agree with Troy, you'll need to find some armor plate steel, everything else WILL get worn out quickly. I belive it is mentioned somewhere that M855 will penetrate 3/8 inch mild steel at 100yards, it will indeed!

A number of yrs ago I made some .5" steel targets (which I still have) from AR500 steel. This is a high abrasion/high impact rated steel...for loader buckets/dump bodies. Its easy to cut (oxygas) and weld. The only thing M855 does to it at 100yds is make a *small* dimple. Ive fired several thousand rounds of all calibers (esp 30-06 & 308)at them so far and theres no sign of wearing out. You should be able to get this locally at your steel supplier. I went the 'cheap' route and bought a 'drop' (partial sheet) for about $30. I made 6 swinging targets from it of various sizes. AP

My first target was about like that one except with 200+ more hits to it. Two shots in the same hole will go through and I'd say maybe 10% of the M855 steel core stuff went through first shot, it could be those were double taps so I'm not 100% sure. I did find that some of the steel cores got stuck in the craters, that was pretty cool. Also, I do think for some reason the Q3131A made a bigger crater than the '02 LC XM193. ymmv

This plate stopped everything at 150yds except 50BMG API.... 25-06 100gr handloads at 3000fps++ @ 100yds zipped right through on a previous test day. 30 caliber AP went through but barely @ 100yds. Still trying to master the stand...the Barrett 82A1 broke the last stand with the second shot. [:(]
