Thinking about buying this AR upper. It's complete with BCG and CH for $350. I just don't like no name brands, can anyone identify it? It has a "L M" stamped on the upper.

LAR / Martin Marietta? you're correct as far as I know. USGI contractor for replacement parts if I'm no mistaken |

Yeah I did a search on here and that's what I came up with. Do they make decent stuff?
|

You are probably better off asking in the retro forum. Otherwise you can look at retro black rifle for the codes.

Upper receiver is a mid 70's LAR Martin Marietta M16A1, everything else is 80's A2 stuff (delta ring and handguard). The BCG isn't a Colt.

|
It could be an early 80's commercial offering using a LAR reeiver, similar to a Colt sporter II set up.

I've got a complete lower sitting around going to waste. |

Also, is it a carbine or a rifle? Rifle, which is obvious now. |

I'd say $350 isn't too bad for this set up, I'd buy it and shoot the hell out of it. I recently picked up a LK marked M16A2 upper with a Colt barrel for $300.

$350 for the complete upper isn't bad at all so long as the barrel isn't shot out. I'd be interested in seeing whether it's an HBAR or a gov't profile barrel.

"My first upper was an M16A1 upper with an FN barrel in it. "
How did/does it shoot? My Colt M16A1 with 1/12 twist shoots nice tight patterns with xm193 ammo. |

The surplus M16 upper receiver is like any other upper receiver, as long as it is in spec. The thing that determines its worth for me would be the barrel - who made it, what twist, what barrel profile (I don't do heavies anymore), is it shot out/worn out from cleaning, is it chrome lined, etc.
It's obviously a parts-made upper. I don't know of any factory that is cranking out M16A1 uppers with no brass deflector and M16A2 (or HBAR) barrels. I'd just put a few more bucks with it and get a new one from Bravo Company, if it was me. http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-M16-Government-20-Upper-Receiver-Group-p/bcm-urg-gov-20.htm A used upper could be all shot out, assembled wrong, etc. Only worth the risk if you can check it over first before buying, and if you save enough over new price. If you're not married to the notion of a 20" rifle-gas barrel, this is a good option too: http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=XSTU5035&groupid=55 |

Who knows if it was hacked together or not. $350 was just a pretty sweet deal. |

For $350 don't worry about the profile or twist rate. Ask the seller to post pictures of the rifling. If that's good to go, the only other thing I can see is that carrier key needs staking, and that can be easily done. Also, it'll make for a very unique-looking simple AR with that A1 upper, A2 handguards, delta ring and A2 barrel. That's always good. ![]() |

Really? What are you seeing that we're not seeing? How many M16A2 uppers do you have? |

I guess all I can do is check to make sure the rifling is ok when I go to look at it, if I go to look at it. |

I've done it plenty of times on my A2 by myself. |
