Had a thought. Might've been a dumb thought, but here it is anyways:

Has anyone ever tried using a brass tumbler with english walnut media to thoroughly clean out a bolt or bolt carrier group?

It typically cleans up the carbon from my brass very nicely without pitting, denting etc. I figure I could just take some compressed air to blow off the remains afterwards.

Good question. My logic says yes. I've used mine to clean motorcycle parts.
Walnut hulls certainly won't erode hardened steel.
What say all of you experts?

was wondering the same thing...only thing that i could think of is if you have a bunch of heavy things in there they could bang each other and beat each other up, or somthing like bolt carrier just being to heavy...not really sure.

Im thinking a harbor freight Sonic cleaner is in my future..

It shouldn't hurt anything, but I don't have a issue using  Hoppes #9  and a good brush and it's just as clean in a few minutes.

Hmm, that's a good point... a bolt banging into the carrier might lead to something bad happening. Maybe in a few more thousand rounds when its time to replace my BCG i'll give this a go!

I'm kind of liking the sonic cleaner idea. What solution goes in it?

Slip 2000 Carbon Killer is great for soaking the BCG then just wiping the carbon off.  Their 725 cleaner is what I use in my ultrasonic cleaner. Have a small unit from hf and it does a good job. I have a buddy with that cleans lots of brass. Think I will give this idea a try.. Cant hurt. May take a little longer. I will report back..
