What is the  barrel diameter of a M4 type CMMG .22lr just aft of the muzzle threads?  Would it be possible to mount a FSB there for a rifle length sight radius?  I have an extra A2 upper laying around and this is the route I would like to go.

The first step up aft of the threads is .750, so yes, an FSB should work.

Thanks!  That answers my question.  My first couple ARs were government issue 20 inchers, since then, anything else feels too short.

does anyone know if cmmg would make it like this? I think the dissipator 22 upper would be the ticket as well. I mean all it would really take here is installing the fsb in a different place and substituting rifle length handguards for carbine length, right?

I'll know for sure by midweek but they said the FSB was screwed on so it should move freely.

Well, I got my CMMG .22 barrel today and mounted it in a SP1 upper.  With the FSB mounted as far forward as possible, the length was still too short to fit a pair of rifle handguards. Oh well.  I can live with the carbine length.

Yep, problem you run into is the .22 barrel, even though it's 16", sets further back into the receiver. Thats why a 16" M4 looks more like a 14.5" true M4

Thanks for the update; this information is good to know.  I was planning on the exact same thing, especially since Magpul's rifle-length MOE HGs are rumored to be released soon.

I was thinking about the same thing. Maybe i can do midlength?
Haven't received my upper yet. Still waiting!!

A 9" handguard might put your FSB in the 203 cutout area.  The barrel OD gets funky around there.  It's .750 at the carbine location and .750 just aft of the FH threads, but in between the OD tapers.  You might pull it off with some kind of shim around the barrel.

The barrel Diameter Is .740 aft of the 203 cutout. I just got done putting a midlength handguard on a Sierra upper.
Either the clamp on front sight or railed faux gas block will tighten just fine on the barrel. The railed gas block does get into the 203 cutout area. There is seven sixteenths of the cutout still visible with a Rock River midlength handguard installed. Longer sight radius and does not look bad.

Pictures or it didn't happen...

Really, I would really like to see this. I don't have one of these uppers yet, and I am trying to decide if I can buy one whole and move the sight base or if I should just build one up from parts and use a  FF rail to get the sight radius I'd like

You just might be in luck. I just bought a digital camera this summer. I have never posted a picture on the net. You want to school me on how, it might happen.

Open a Photobucket account and upload there.  After the uploads are complete, you can share it here.

or....

e-mail me a picture or two and I'll gladly post it up (primarily because I'd really like to see your upper as well)

IM with my e-mail address is inbound.

Well, I just put my 14.5" mid-length next to my 16" AR-22 and they are the same over-all length. The 16" .22 barrel is about 1/2 inch longer than the 14.5" but the Phantom FH makes them come out the same OAL.  While I was looking it appears you might be able to move the FSB up and use mid-length hand guards on the rifle. I may try this tomorrow just to see how it looks. I am with you guys, the little carbine hand guards are too short for my tastes. Guess that is whey I have most of my AR's in Mid-Length or Rifle-Length configurations.

Mid-length .22 AR, now there is a great idea.....

Looks great!
From the image, it appears an A2 FSB may not work in this configuration as the forward taper pin / set screws would be "floating" in the cut out area of the barrel.  Looks like I may just go with a carbine length HG on mine.

I ran into that when I mocked mine up after reading Kmart's post.  I'm going to stick with carbine length too.

Karl -
Did you tap your A2 fsb for set screws, or are you planning on pinning it on there?

I drilled and tapped a take-off A2 FSB for set screws.

I have not seen one but isn't the front sight base that CMMG supplies a clamp on type base? The railed gas block they supply clamps on to the barrel diameter, no set screws.

I haven't received my upper yet but it appears that there is still room in front
Of that midlength to use full length handguards. Why won't it work?

I know what you are saying. It looks like there is plenty of room for rifle length guards. That is what I originally wanted to do but after measuring another rifle the best I could tell was that the full length handguards plus the railed gas block would be into the flash hider threads by about a quarter inch. It is possible, however the handguard cap inside diameter would be quite loose over the FH threads. Which would translate to a hanguard with a lot of movement.

A picture will help, too bad mine's not that great.

The front leg of the FSB ends up on the flash hider threads.  If it was a 5.56 barrel it would've worked but, like shadowcop said, a .22lr barrel sits farther back in the reciever.  You lose to much real estate to make it work.

Darn it! Don't prove me wrong! Somethings getting milled!! LOL
I really want this to work.
