A stripped upper, or a complete one? What does your front sight look like? Is it buried, or is it turned most of the way up?

Make sure you don't have the rear sight flipped up to the long range aperture.

If he's used to the sights on an A2 type, I'll bet that's what happened. The short range aperture on the A1 is the reverse of what it is on the A2, and since both holes look the same, only the "L" on the long range side indicated which is which
