New guy here, other than loosing 8" in overall length, what are the benefits of the CAR or M4?

the benefit is the length and weight. That's it, unless you want to count the looks cool factor.

ETA~ welcome...

the adjustable stock and shorter barrel make the M4/CAR-15 more suitable for uses such as carrying in a vehicle and close in, room clearing type combat situations. The M4 handguards are fatter with double heat shields also.

How much reliability lost due to shorter barrel? Does M4 commando (11.5") has same gas system as M4 Carbine (14.5") and 16" M4? I guess if 11.5" work fine in military, there should be little to worry in 16" civilian?

Most of the 16" rifles I have seen function well. More functioning problems with 11.5".

16" loses appx 200 fps as compared to 20".

11.5" loses appx 600 fps as compared to 20".

For most of us that will be jumping through the hoops to do the SBR thing, and must have at least a 16" barrel, I like the velocity advantage over 11.5" barrels (which have a welded on 5.5" fake CAR flash hider).
