I bought a 1000rds of .223 loose packed ammo. Being An ARF member i counted it all and It was 26 rounds short of 1000. While packing it in 5 Ziplock bags of 180rds each (Poorman's battle packs).

Do you guys who buy in loose bulk seem to always find less rounds than advertised?

this is a guess, but I think they weigh the ammo to determine how many rounds is in the package

ETA: In the Army we always had to try and recover a certain percentage of brass, grenade spoons and practice grenades after we were done shooting at the range, and they weighed it to determine how many of each we brought in.

I have bought a lot of bulk loose packed ammo and it varies, most of the time it is packed heavy with at least 10 to 20 rounds to my good. Some times it will be short

I'm still ahead though

Seriously, I wonder if they just fill the boxs by weight, or top them off.

Seriously, I wonder if they just fill the boxs by weight, or top them off.

I did recount one bag its on the money... The ammo came in surplus .50 cal cans not boxed commericially and their was plenty of rom to spare probally enough for 200rds or so.

No, I've bought a couple cans of reloaded 45 and 9 and when I open the can there's a helluva lot of ammo in there and it looks about like how many was in the last can I bought, so it's fine.

How are you sure you didn't count wrong? Try weighing your 180 round baggies of ammo on a scale.

I count.
Once in a while there is A round short. Sometimes there is an extra round.
Most of the time when I buy 1,000 bulk rounds I get 1,000 rounds.

I am retired so have plenty of time to count. I counted 4 cans of Radway Green from Widener. The easy part was counting the Ammo Cans. After several counts, I determined there were four. Just kidding. There were 720 rounds, 72 stripper clips and 6 bandoliers in each can. You can't get much better than that.

I have never counted. On a related note, I purchased 3 cans of SS109 from AIM. 2 for a friend, one for me. I checked out mine, it was packed with the usual bandoliers and stripper clips. I delivered his two cans, he opened them and one was filled to the top with just ammo. I wish I would have opened all of them first!

I recently ordered from AmmoMan.Com a 1,000 rounds case of bulk packed XM885PD ammunition; actual hand count of the number of rounds in the case: 1,011

SG has shorted me 1 or 2 rounds on their cans of 150 .50BMG... but to their credit, and dare I say that, they've refunded me more per round than the initial cost... a $1.16 round nets a refund of $1.45

I wouldnt bother, but if I was worried, I'd count out 100 rnds, weigh them, then weigh the entire thing, then the empty container and do the math.

I got 1,013 of the LC M855PD from Midway in a bulk box a few months ago. I culled 3 rounds for dented cases, so I got an extra full stripper. Of the four cans of Radway Green that I have purchased... one can, 720 rounds, 72 strippers, and 6 bandoleers each. I was hoping for a tracer or two.

Basically I was shorted about $4.00 of ammo.

Its reloaded ammo so I check every round be it new or used no matter the quantity or how its packaged. I had to place them in bags of 180 anyway. Only takes about 20-30 minutes to count and check the rounds. Not a big deal if you can count past ten.

When you're counting to divide it into portions than I don't see a problem with someone finding out they were short or over. I don't think he is obsessed or anal about it.

i'd count it too. 4 bucks is 4 bucks. when ordering bulk bullets i find they usually err in my favor. i had midway short me 1 round on a box of 100 one time, but overall im ahead with them too.

it's not hard to count the stuff if you repack, it happens by default.

maybe you guys and gals have more experience than i do, but when i look at an ammo can with 900 loose rounds or 1000 loose rounds i can't tell a difference, so i dont have much choice

I picked up a case of Wolf a year or two ago at a gun store, took it home and slit it open to find four 20-rnd boxes missing from one of the sleeves. It had been cut open, and the box retaped.
