Anybody have one of these?  My friend wants to know how they hold up. He says they are only 6 lbs. Any info would be helpful. Thanks

There was a thread on another AR forum that showed pictures of it splitting at the rear by the takedown pin.  I am not a poly-hater, as I think Glocks rock, and the Kel-tec SU-16 CA is a great PDW weapon.  With that sadi, my GAU-5/P build (slick side AR with lightweight 16" barrel weighs less than 6 pounds, even with an Aluminum receiver.

I had a ProfOrd carbon 15 that self destructed with less than 300 rounds through it.

Why is this in retro?

g/f's dad got 1 a while back during the whole cabelas sale (i think it was roughly $649 w/ a red dot).  we have put an easy 1000-1100 rounds through it (factory, mostly AE) and not any issues yet.  a few FTE, but it was the rounds fault.  hes roughly 72 y/os old has nothen but lever actions, a heavy 30-06, and an m1a.   he held the poly ar15 and loved the weight and he likes the damn near lack of recoil.  but if he puts 500 rounds through it a year that will be alot.  we just blew through the roughly 1000 rounds cause he wanted to play with the new gun.

Since you have realized your mistake I won't say it.

A friend of mine bought one years ago, he liked it. I do not know how it actually holds up, cause he did not shoot it that much. Since he did not shoot it that much last I knew he was trying to sell it. He wanted to sell it to me (for full price. LOL) but I never did like the gun & I told him there was no way in H E double L i would buy it. As far as I know he still has it.

Don't personally have one and have always been talked out of one.  Lots of threads in GD about them over the years.  Think I'd stick to the tried and true aluminum receiver unless a screamin to good to be true deal.  As stated above not very hard to take a BM super lightweight barrel or any lw profile 16" barrel and come up with a carbine just as light if on a diet.  Hang a bunch of accessories on any of them and the weight is going up.  My fluted 16" Hbar only weighs 6 lbs 5 ozs and it's a very durable tack driver.  Also have a Colt 6520 and two J&T lightweight carbines.  All come in right at 6 lbs.  Lots of ways to achieve the same goal and not be proprietary.  Good luck on decision.  Ice cream comes in different flavors for a reason.

My wife's 16" pencil barrel carbine runs 6.8 pounds loaded!  5.8 without a mag.

You don't need to resort to polymers to get the weight off; you do have to avoid all the non-retro stuff that accumulates to a modern build.

This is the impression I got that you don't need the polymer to save wieght. I have an old Colt SP-1 that I seriously don't think it wieghs more than 6lbs.and I shoots better than my newer and heavier Colt H-bar target.

I just finished swapping out recievers on a carbon 15 I got for a good trade. The carbon rifle was decent enough, I just didnt like the thought of the barrel being threaded into plastic and maybe breaking off if I dropped it. If you can get one for a decent price, then you can always swap out the recievers to standard ones.

Before:

After:

It was an easy swap. Everything except the barrel nut, rear takedown pin, and trigger guard swapped over to the standard recievers.

Heres my build thread
