Is it cheaper to piece and build an upper, or just buy one complete? I guess factoring tools into it as well, but the tools could be handy for future use as well.

Tooling costs for assembling an upper is significant (say $80) so probably will not be paid for with one build. It would be cheaper, then, to buy as a kit with an assembled upper. That said, I bought the tools anyway, as the ability to remove the barrel has been useful.

He's right if your only building one upper and you dont have access to the tools then its cheaper to buy a complete upper. After you buy the upper buy the tools one at a time and have them ready for your next build then you can do it cheaper.

Pondered this as well since I'm planning on building. I've decided to just build and buy the tools.

If you plan on building more AR's over time you may as well buy tools now.

Do the tools required fit both AR10's and AR15's?

TIA
