Hello,

I'm building a vietnam era M16A1 clone and I could use some help with the right parts. This is the shopping list I came up with:

Bushmaster A1 upper receiver $129.95
Bushmaster M16 Government Type 20in Barrel $185.00
Bushmaster XM15 E2S Complete Lower Receiver with A2 Buttstock $295.00
Bushmaster Complete Bolt and Bolt Carrier Assembly $119.95
Bushmaster A1 Manual Rear Sight Adjustment Knob $9.95
Bushmaster Charging Handle Assembly $24.95
U.S. Military M16 triangular handguards, buttstock and pistol grip $15.55

TOTAL: $780.35

What do you think about this set up? Don't worry about building a pre-ban upper on post-ban lower as I live in Finland...No AW ban here :D :D :D

The BM A1 upper is actually a C7, with the forward assist, port cover, and brass deflector. The C7 is my personal favorite, but for a 'nam style I would recommend one of the DPMS "slick-side" uppers that are available from Brownell's.

Looks like you have everything except for the barrel.  The barrel on your list is barrel used in the A2 configuration.  It's thin under the handgards and thicker outside whereas the early Colt's used a pencil thin barrel with not contours. This barrel also uses a A2 flash suppressor.

You need a thin 20", barrel(like a superlight) with an A1, birdcage flash suppressor.  From looking at the Bushmaster catalog, it doesn't appear that they carry them.  You can get these barrels other places but I can't say where.  Some of the distributors like CMMG, Legal Transfers or Georgia Precision may have them.

Good luck,

TFF:

I forgot that the twist rate on the Bushmaster barrel on your list has a 1 in 9 twist and you want a 1 in 12 twist.

Here is a guy who is selling one:

Teardrop Forward assist and maybe a Chrome B/BC

Thank you very much for your help. About the twist rate..I prefer 1:7-1:9 instead of 1:12 why? This gives me more bullet weights to play with. I believe Bushmaster carries a lightweight barrel...I'm not sure if it's available in 20" pre-ban config though. The Bushmaster A1 upper comes standard with teardrop forward assist..

Notack,

I think I go for that C7 :) 98% of people won't recognize the difference anyway. (at least around here) :) :)

Thanks again!!!

Petri

Finn --

If you're serious you need to search some more.

The supply of real XM16E1/M16A1 uppers has dried up from what I can tell.  But neither of these had the brass hump and both had forward assist.

Same with the barrel, the Bushmaster "Government Profile" barrel is pure M16A2.

The XM16E1, the predominant rifle in RVN was a "slabside".  Just like a Colt's SP1.  Real M16A1 lowers, with the mag release protector were very late into RVN.  XM16E1 had the original 3 prong flash supressor.  It was replaced in late 1968 with the "bird cage" supressor with slots all the way around.

There are some Colt's commercial "A1" uppers without brass deflectors.  If the Bushmaster 20" government profile barrel is sent out to be turned down to the right diameter it'll be fine as soon as you fit the right muzzle device.

And the finish on these rifles is M16 grey, not black.

I may have a photo of my clone.  It's all Colt's XM16E1/M16A1 parts other than the Essential Arms lower which I'd replace if a grey SP1 lower with the right sized pins and detents ever drops into my lap.

True A1 style uppers (FA, no brass deflector) turn up on E-bay quite a bit.  That's where I found mine.  Slick sided M16 uppers (no FA) show up often also.

The new lower won't be 100% accurate but less noticeable than the difference between the A1/A2 upper.

I think the Bushmaster 'government' barrel is the A2 style (thicker from sight tower to muzzle) & not a true A1 'pencil' barrel.

You might even use the original style 3 prong flash suppressor (don't use it to open C-ration cases) [:D].  And you left out the required 20 rnd mags.  30 rnd mags just look so out of place on a AR15 with triangular handguards IMO.

I wish the last SEBR was in this configuration. Well there is always next year. A vietnam special is way overdue.

Notes on the CMMG pic.

1) it's not an A1 upper; it's a Canadian late model.  Brass deflector and round forward assist are the tipoff. Also the color is too black to be early

2) that looks like a split pin rather than a rivet securing the front sling swivel; which means that the barrel is extremely early, and not chrome lined.

In other words, somebody's mongrel "put together"

SARCO had 1:12 twist M16A1 barresl for $135.

http://www.sarcoinc.com/prev12.html

You also need an A1 buttstock and pistol grip.

A few years ago I built a post-ban M16A1 replica with the Bushy/C7 receievr CAV- comp.

I was real nice. I sold it on ar15.com after I bought another SP-1 ans needed cash.

$1100 for an upper is a little high for me.

Shamalym,

I have one of the CMMG A1 style uppers. The front swivel is riveted on. Also the barrel is marked C MP Chrome Bore. From what I was told, these were made up with NOS GI barrels. I must say, it works very well so far.

Glad to hear that you got the late barrel. Must have just been the pic [:D]

Actually, I just got a brand new early (chrome chamber only) barrel, to put on the slick side USAF M16 upper I got ahold of.  Don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but down here we're seeing a whole bunch of milsurp M16 and M16A1 uppers coming thru.

The Finn's problem is going to be finding the parts he needs from someone who will go to the trouble of exporting them. He might try CDNN www.cdnninvestments.com. They've been advertising some complete M16A1 uppers, Colt made and brand new.  Don't know if CDNN does exports, but if it was me, I'd check them out[:D]

Don't know whether to laugh or cry about this one. I am proud that no bidder went beyond the usual price for a barrelled M16 Air Force model upper.  1 in 14 twist my ass[;D]

Just another reason why I don't bother looking for stuff anywhere else but right here on the AR15 web site. Yeah, we have an occasional screw off advertiser, but 99% of the time what's advertised on this site is shipped and it's exactly as listed.

And don't forget on an M-16 or M-16A1 you'll need to replace the delta ring with a slip ring.

do you know of a source for slip rings????

I think you guys are all looking in the wrong spots.  I am planning to do this when the ban lifts.  Goto foulton armory they have everything you need even m16a1 barrels (pencils) for 200 bucks.  They even have the old m16 uppers!

Fulton armory has what they are calling a hornet upper.  It is post ban with an A1 upper with the brass deflector and has a govt.  surplys a1 barrel 1 in 12 twist with a faux flash hider  the price is good at $439.95 for the complete upper including charging handle and bolt and carrier.  Just a thought I have been thinking about the same project ever since I saw this upper.
