This will be a thread in progress.

We officially started our ArmaLite Prototype this month, but have been gathering parts and data for over a year.

Sight Radius: 18.25"
(American Rifleman, June 1959, Page 24)

Barrel length: approx. 21"
(Measured and compared from about a dozen pictures of original ArmaLites from Black Rifle, etc.)

Distance between front face of upper receiver and rear face of FSB: approx 11.75"
(Measured and compared from about a dozen pictures of original ArmaLites from Black Rifle, etc.)

Barrel diameter forward of FSB: approx .480"
(Measured and compared from about a dozen pictures of original ArmaLites from Black Rifle, etc.)

I'll post scans of magazine articles, etc, as I go. I will also be adding information and correcting dimensions as more information becomes available.

FSB, as received.

FSB, after I machined off the casting marks from the front face and sanded smooth and flat.

FSB, rear face after I machined the rear flat and square to the front face.

Top of FSB after machining.

Parts I have so far. The carbine barrel is there just for a mockup. The FSB on the carbine barrel is at approx the correct place for the AR proto. The barrel I'm using is a Remington 700 .223 Rem barrel, currently 24" and .650" at the muzzle.

80% lower as received from Braceman.

DuraCoat Colt Grey.

It will be fun to see all the proto builds!
Not sure when ill start working on mine.

I measured pictures in The Black Rifle too.
Here is what I came up with:

Which S/N prototype are y'all going to be recreating?

I'm excited to see all the builds come together! I wish I had the extra funds to make one myself!

I might have someone reprofile the end of the barrel a bit, but as to shifting the position of the FSB and gas port etc, probably not. Need to dig out TBR and do some more planning.

Your observations seem to jive with my own. It pretty much places the front sight base directly behind it's current location.

I've also complied a few other differences and theories as well. The bolt stop dimensions, the pins holding it in place, the dimple on the trigger guard push pin, the steel/aluminum anti rotation spacer between the stock and receiver, solid bakelite butt pad, etc. I'll certainly be more than happy to add whatever I can to help you and everyone else out with your build/builds. I know that I've always wanted mine to be as spot on as possible and I'm glad to see I'm not alone.

SO, why didn't you just wait until you actually began the build to post this? Just wondering.

I have already started. I milled the FSB yesterday, and the receiver is coming back from Braceman this week.

We want pictures, even if you're not done.  Just getting to see your progress is cool.

+1 - I like the idea of this thread starting with "in progress".

Is the gas tube hole drilled through or is it closed at the front?

It's drilled through.

This is the best pic I have.

I've lost track of who was going to try and replicate the long carrier key seen on certain AR-10 and AR-15 prototypes.

Very cool! I'll be following your build for sure!

That was me. All I got around to testing was if an off the shelf upper and charging handle would be compatible. They are but, I discovered that the entire carrier of the prototypes is different and just got off track. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to make with the right tools, and I'd say TexasRifleman has the right tools.

Good looking build man. Your really taking it to the next level.

Aaaahh!
I thought you were showing off a prototype firing pin next to GI Joe's sidearm for scale.

(Hey––I'll give ya' a hunnert bucks hard cash for that Remington Rand! She is purdy!)
