I think the CMP guys prefer the [url=http://www.compasslake.com/22uppers.htm]Compass Lake[/url] .22 uppers. Or [url=http://www.accuracyspeaks.com/22lrar15.htm]Accuracy Speaks[/url]. They seem to be aimed at the competition shooter, more so than some of the others like [url=http://www.kurtskustomfirearms.citymax.com/catalog/item/29585/1131.htm]Kurt[/url] or [url=http://www.kuehlprecisionfirearms.com/]Kuehl[/url].

I concur, and although I believe in the,"you get what you pay for" idea...neither my wallet nor my personal skill level are up to those levels! Thanks for the links. Now leaning toward KKF and Kuehl as solutions. Seems like building one is too expensive. Anyone have good or bad to pass on KKF and Kuehl?

No personal experience with any of them yet, but I've seen many good things posted on here about both KKF and Kuehl. Everybody that has one seems to love it.
I'm looking for a plinker, so like you I don't think I'm up to the AS or CLE prices. I'm leaning towards Kuehl because KKF still uses the chamber adapter instead of chambering the barrel directly. But I need to find out if he can do a mid-length though. And see if he can use one of the Les Baer uppers w/o the fwd assist. I'm sure KKF can do any config, but I don't know if Kuehl will. I looked into just getting the barrel and building it myself to save money, but unless I already had the rest of the parts it'd cost me more than just buying a complete upper. |

Believe me, I've tried to skin that cat a few different ways. Best I've found is buy a complete .223 upper in the config you like, sell the .223 barrel out of that one to help offset the cost of the (expensive) Douglass .22lr barrel. Still an expensive upper but with the "dedicated LR" advantages and you get to do it yourself. Best source for the .22lr barrel???

As I understand it, Kurt uses a barrel with the proper size & twist for .22LR, then puts on a barrel extension w/o the slots for the lugs on a regular bolt so you can't accidently chamber a .223 round. But it still uses the chamber adapter and unmodified kit.

Call Frank at Compass Lake, buy a M-261 kit, have him modify it to work with one of his barrels ,buy one of his barrels,and put it on the upper of your choice.... Mags for the m-261 are @ $15 through Sarco,fit in your 20/30 round GI mags and work well. I have a CMP .22 upper built almost that way.. I got a shotout match barrel and lined it. And built an upper that is same weight and balance as my match upper. Don't have near $ that the manufactures are asking, and shoots 1/2 moa.

I already had everything I needed except the barrel so I had Kurt just build the barrel. I think he only charged me $165 to custom build it, complete with M4 profile, front sight post, delta ring, and custom made 2-3/16" long A2 flash suppressor (to bring the length to 16" for use on my non-NFA AR's). That was a few years ago, though.

Thanks all for the great info. Although Compass Lake has a great and well deserved reputation, I am currently working w/Rick at Kuehl on a solution. He seems to have the appropriate level of quality/price for what I'm trying to do.
