I've done a couple of searches, and found nothing on this subject. I just got rid of the 17S and got a shorty Bushmaster AR. Bang-boing Bang-boing. I can live with it if I have too, but if anyone has a solution I'd really appreciate it. Thanks everyone.

Seriously, I like my boings, but my Cav lower was really loud, so I lightly greased (not oiled - but "axle grease" greased the spring - no more boing [:(]

Look [url=http://www.olyarms.com/usa.html]here [/url]go to accesories page and scroll about half way down. The Oly Pneumatic buffer. It's how I got rid of the sproing sound.

No reliability issues since installing it AT ALL. Works like a champ.

Xanadu: I was thinking of trying something like that... or maybe some silicone tubing in strategic locations.
Everyone: Thanks for the input, any more ideas are appreciated. A little boing wont cause me to lose sleep, just curious if there was a fix.

Slash: With the AK brake on the end of the 14.5" barrel it hurts not to (wear hearing protection). I can still feel / hear the boing as my jawbone and ear are basically right on top of the buffer. I fired the M17 a couple of times without plugs in, and it wasn't too bad. Made that mistake ONCE with the new girl. Made me dizzy, caused severe pain in my left ear, and I almost dropped the rifle. I'm still not sure I've gotten all of the hearing back on the left side.

I cannot emphasize enough that you wear hearing and eye protection while engaging in shooting sports. Loss of sight and/or hearing is not a fun way to go through life. No excuses!

If it really bothers you, you can call Bushmaster and order one of there de-boingers. They don't catalog these, so you have to call and ask about them. I have two and they really work.

When I detail the carbines I just lube the springs as normal. Lightly! reduces "boing" a bit but not altogether. I LIKE IT! Allows me to remember how simply effective the weapon design is!

I'm so hard of hearing that I don't hear the boing. Wish I could. Although I do hear the loud report. I ain't that hard of hearing.

Seriously, is there anything better than a nice SP1 or Gov't barrel A2 and listening to that spring under your cheek and hearing spent brass bounce of concrete? [:D]

Ya know... you'd think I asked how to get rid of the "annoying click noise" when I released the trigger after a shot. Bunch of comedians in here, I tell you! [nana]
Having not fired an AR since I was 16ish, but having fired other semis, I wasn't expecting the spring noise.
I may try the spring, It doesn't annoy me enough to go with the pneumatic buffer though, HighStrung1: yeah stupid hurts,
tlnzz: if you aren't attempting to make a joke (tough to tell tone on the boards sometimes) do you have a part number or a description you can share? I'm NOT actually going to call bushmaster and ask for a deboinger, but...
Lumpy196: My fave is watching the barrel on my "Browning pat" Savage shotgun slide back into the breach as the gun cycles. It makes all kinds of cool kachunk noises, and it's fun to watch... It ain't worth $50 but it's fun to make noise with (brings a real smile to my face just thinking about shooting it). I haven't (quite) fallen in love with my AR yet, but it is fun, and well we'll see.

If you want to get rid of the sprong noise keep shooting it without hearing protection! In no time you won't be able to hear that annoying sprong or that annoying bang the AR makes. Seriously though I wear earplugs plus muffs when I shoot. It's so damn quite that all I can hear is the action cycling and the sprong. The report is hardly heard. I value my hearing and eyes too much to lose them. Without them what fun would shooting be anyway?

Axle grease has stopped the boing in my rifles for basically no cost and I have not heard anyone speak out against it yet.

I agree w/ gordonm1, I bought a tube of white Lithium grease @ Napa for $2.00 & put it on the plunger & spring & as deep into the tube as i could reach.What a change. Really slickens the feel of action up too. My buddy noticed the difference in sound from about 20' away. No BOING here !!!!
