While doing some servicing of some GI mags at work yesterday, replacing springs and followers, I had some older mags that seemed a little brittle and suffered either a cracked tab or a complete break. Keep for range mags or strip the components and throw the body in the recyclable aluminum can pile?

Strip it and trash the bod! I don't believe in keeping crap anywhere near me.

I've seen pix of Israeli mags that have been kept in service by using a plastic/aluminum plug in the bottom held in place with button head screws thru the side. Not pretty & it reduces the capacity to 28rnds or so. If the IDF doesn't have a problem keeping bodged mags like this in service you shouldn't have any problem using one for a range mag.

I have repaired a couple with JB Weld, one with both small tabs broken and one with only one small tab broken. I did it just to see how long they would last. I fixed in June 2004 and they have held up. That being said, they are only for range use, and I make it a point to use them first every time. Of course I can no longer dissasemble them, and now with new mags cheap I will eventually replace them.

A few of my range mags work just fine with three tabs. I wouldn't trust them for defensive use, but they've never given me a problem.

Back in the nineties when Colt was shipping 20 rounders with that foolish block riveted in to limit capacity I screwed up a bunch of them while removing the block.

Now that mags are cheap and plentiful again I'll probably begin shitcanning them, but if your mag inventory is limited there's no reason to dump them as long as three of the four tabs are still intact.
