Prior to today, 230 rds flawless with XM193 55g with Lancer and Magpul mags.

Today two times the bolt closed on empty mags. Different mag this time- known good Colt 9-rounder. Different ammo too- XM855BK 62g.

Build:
Upper:
Noveske Recon 16" barrel
Colt BCG
Noveske upper
Rainier CH

Lower:
Gen III Noveske lower
Geissele SSA
Colt LPK
Spikes T2 buffer and spring

Any thought? I'm thinking mag or ammo related.

Edit: forgot to say but it has a Seekins bolt catch.

Does your bolt catch move freely? Could be sticking or the plunger spring picked up some grime from the first 230 rnds.OR could be that the T2 is right on the threshold of being too heavy causing it to short stroke randomly.

Bolt catch seems fine, no catching. I wonder if the T-2 was the issue but I thought if that was the case then the 55grains would have had issues too. I have some match ammo I'll try next. 77grain. We will see.

It's such a nice, soft shooter I really don't want to have to change out the buffer.

Forgot one thing- I did run one P-mag today with 55g and it locked open fine.

A properly gassed 16" midlength gas system could short-stroke with some ammo when using a H2 buffer, especially with a plus-power spring.  Those generally run best on heavily overgassed systems.

Just because you try different weight bullets is near meaningless.  Different powder burn rates have more impact on this than bullet weight, and you don't have any control over factory ammo.

I'd switch to a standard carbine buffer, or H1 weight, and see of this behavior continues.  I'd also spend a lot of time single loading to test locking back every time.

Edit to add, you didn't say what you were using for lube.  Make sure you are using CLP or something similar, lightly lubed in the important places, and not using any grease or froglube in cold climates.  (lets not start a pro-FL or anti-FL discussion please)

Copy, thanks. On this gun I'm using Breakfree CLP. Funny you said this, I have a MWS that I'm using as a test case for Froglube just for shits and giggles.

I'll go back to the range and shoot some more and switch buffers if necessary.
