The Daniel Defense and Viking Tactics offset mounts are two excellent all-in-one choices:

I have the YHM 45d rail with the Vltor mount on M73. This is on a carbine length HG with tape switch. This gives me enough room to still have a good grip on the HG.

Appox how much more comfortable are we talking about with the YHM off-set mounts? Is it difficult to engage the light without them or just a bit easier?

it depends on the size of your hands. i have a surefire m3 mounted with a n elchepo scope ring and it's not uncomfortable for me. i do like this though

+1 for the Viking Tactical mount. It works great and mounts very securely. Just make sure that you understand that it will mar the finish on your light. I use a Surefire G2 so it's a non-issue for me.

I have the Viking Tactical mount and it is great. IT puts the light real close to the rail so it is streamlined.
The only down side is it is plastic and the set-screws holding the light are a little cheesy IMO. Also, non-quick detach is a no-go for me. Can anyone that has both the Viking and the DD tell me if they put the light in the same position, i.e. really close to the rail? Does anyone have a pic of the gap using the DD? FYI, the YHM offset rail put my light WAY to far from the rail for me. There was like a 3/4" gap. |

Vikiing Tactics is ok, but I HATED that I had to have a wrench to take off the light. The only thing I don't like about the DD is that the nut isn't captured, and you will lose the springs if you unscrew it too far. |

+1 for the YHM mount, and for dealing with Calvin aka Brightflashlights.
The YHM mount puts my fat little stubby thumb exactly where it needs to be!

I found a pic of the DD mount. It looks like it puts the light at about the same distance from the rail as the YHM. Are there any off-set mounts that put the light in a position like the Viking, but are aluminum or steel and thumbsrcrew attached??? |

Did you try it off 6 o'clock? Off the bottom rail it will position the light closer to the v. grip vs. coming off 3 & 9. |

See above question. If you want try a YHM again I have a no hassle return policy if it doesn't fit your needs. I also have the lg. head thumbscrews for the offset mounts as well. |

Sweet. I'm looking to put the light 1/2" or less frm the rail. I'm not really concerned about shadowing. I sold the YHM on the EE already.

I was searching around and found this from GG&G. Might be worth looking into. It's kinda pricy though. I see Impact Guns has it for $60. Maybe one of the dealers on this sight can do better. I would possibly be interested in it too if the price was right.

Finally...
    The Vltor mount was used in the pics above because it was quick install, my recommendation would be to go with a Weaver low profile ring, it's the absolute closest fit for a ring mount and will save you approx. 3/32" over the Vltor. |

Do rail covers work with that mount? I know with the Viking its to close to the rail for covers to fit on the neighboring rail.....

They'll fit if you use the right ring mounts but it's a no go if you're using the Vltor mount. |

Can the offset mount be used on the top of a flat top AR, with the carry handle installed? In other words, can I use it for a light and still use the iron sights?

Ok, I don't see a tapeswitch, how do you activate it up there?
I did 8 hours of CQB training today, mostly lowlight. I think I am going to have to shell out the cash for the Surefire tailcap that has both the button and tape switch. Even w/ an offset mount, it is hard to reach the light w/ your thumb when you are holding the weapon at odd angles, peaking around corners, etc. $90 for a tailcap is hard to stomach though... |

Grab the VFG with my left hand. Thumb straight up ala Fonzie... I hold the gun that way anyway. It allows me to "drive" the gun more effectively. The light would also work on the nine-o-clock rail as well. But in this position I can reach the light, and it doesn't interfere with the forward sling mount when I run a three-point. If it were the two cell X2 I might not be able to reach it, or have to move it aft. It is also far enough forward it doesn't shadow off the FSB. (one of the advantages of the longer X3) Some will run it on the three-o-clock rail because it is better for "slicing the pie" going through doorways, but I've found it depends on which side you slice from. Few of the guys I run with use tape switches. I think Pentagon products are great, and the price tag is much more palitable to poor cops - and everyone else - then SureFire. |

Huh, still having a hard time picturing that, unless you have REALLY long thumbs  I need to be able to bi-lateral transition, so that wont work. I don't really want to go tape switch, but I think I'm going to have to. At least the new surefire tailcap has a button along w/ the tape switch. |

Has anyone ever seen a mount that stays on the gun but allows a flashlight to be quickly disconnected?
It would be nice to pull my stinger from my duty belt and put it on the rifle for longer periods of illumination instead of burning up lithiums. It wouldn't be used for CQB, but more for keeping light on possible knuckleheads until we get a situation figured out. |

Well, since no one has heard of one, I'll change this post to a plea to any of the manufacturers that read this site to please look into creating a mount like this.
I think that it would work best with a throw mount so you don't waste time spinning a thumbscrew to snug down the light. |

Thanks for the pic. That is almost perfect for what I'm looking for. My big concern with the Vltor mount is that I have to loosen the mount on the rifle to insert or remove the light.
(I'd also prefer a throw lever, but that's just me being picky) |

If you have a Surefire M series (mine's an M962), you could use this offset mount from LaRue. Not a low cost setup by any stretch, but it might be worth checking out...

I tried to order the Larue Tactical LT117, like pictured above and everyone seems to be out of them, even Larue. Looks like a good setup though!

For those who have the thumbscrew style mounts, do you find that they work loose during long shooting sessions. I saw a guy at a recent class that had his thumbscrew mounted Surefire 962 almost fall off his gun after about an hour of shooting.

You have to really crank them down and occassional check them or use a drop of 222 or 242 loctite to keep 'em tight.

I like the larue one, but it's expensive.
Is there any QD offset option other than Larue? E.g. real QD, not a screw? I like the DD as well, but those springs are easy to lose. |

Psst...don't tell anybody, but...
I have seen the concept pics of LaRue's new 1" off-set light mount. They are in production and should be going thru the anodizing process right now. It will feature his locking throw lever and "built tank tough" construction. Folks, I think he's got another winner on his hands. I expect that mine should be here any day now.....I have been bugging him about it so long, mine should come in a presentation case with my initials engraved on it. And a pretty girl to mount it for me.

The only piece of LaRue gear I own is the light mount, but I have to say it's built like a tank! I can see why there is so much uproar whenever LaRue introduces a new mount/rail/sight. |

I just ordered the Larue mount. I don't think it is that expensive, conidering the light it is for was $300. I just hope it puts the light in a good spot for my thumb! |

I think you'll be pretty happy. I bought it because when I switched to the TD grip, with the standard ARMS mount I had trouble reaching the switch. The LaRue mount lowered the light to the perfect location. |
