What is the Best model of ACOG for all around use?? And WHY?? I have read the older "Aimpoint for room clearing" while acog is better for distance shooting" posts, but I am looking for advice on which particular acog model to get.

And are the marine/army acog models with the side BDC "hash marks" & killflash worth the extra money??

Thanks, Bill.

A most excellent question. I was getting ready to post a similar question and I'm really glad that you did. I've done searches and not found a clear and concise explanation.

I'm all ears...

Once upon a a time the favs on the board were the ta31 and ta11. THere have been additions to the ACOG family so I don't know how they would rank now. Some liked the donut some liked the chevron. Then there is color choice.  Trijicon offers a lot of options.

I really like my TA01NSN. I really like how the amber cross hair only shows up in low light conditions otherwise it is just regular non illuminated cross hairs. You can see a picture of what the reticle looks like here http://www.trijicon.com/parts/ACF924D.jpg I don't have the greatest vision either that's why I opted for one of the higher magnification Acogs. So for anything from 50 yards or further I use the optic itself and any closer I use the iron sights mounted on top which are illuminated.

Overall I have been very satisfied with my purchase of the TA01NSN not sure if it would work for everyone as well as it has for me but I would definitely recommend it.

TA31 or TA33 are the best all-around ACOGs in my opinion. The others are more mission specific.

The TA33-R8 is the best "all-around" ACOG I've owned so far.
I traded it on a whim and have regretted it since.

IMHO TA31A

With BAC it is a decent CQB optic once you get used to it, and of course it is excellent at engaging anything out past 50yards

My suggestion would be to wait, ane here's why.

Trijicon is completely changing all of their acogs, they are adding new colors, new reticles, and new BDCs.

http://www.trijicon.com/pdfs/ACOG_Specs.pdf

Just me but I wouldn't spend 1k on an optic to only find out damn I could've got a 4x instead of a 3.5x with the same reticle or damn I could've had a green reticle instead of red etc.

As for 3x 3.5x or 4x I really like the 4x. The FOV is what to me was the biggest factor. I looked through a 4x at 100 yards and then a 3.5 and a 3.

Keep in mind that a 3x acog has either a 25.5 ft FOV or a 19.3 ft FOV @ 100 yards. The 4x is 36.8 ft @ 100 yards. It's a big difference to me. The other factor is eye relief. I shoot NTCH and the eye relief wasn't an issue for me on the 4X. Not sure how you like to shoot but for me I can't really see a huge advantage to having more eye relief on something. Last thing is it's a huge purchase unless you're just banking out of control, check it out first hand see what reticle "pops" to your eye after that just pull the trigger you'll be happy you did.

Anyone else who can speak to this?  I was told by someone else that the iron sights on top of an ACOG couldn't hit anything when they used it on their AR.  I understand they aren't going to be precise, but can they be effectively used 0-25 or 50 yards?

yesterday I went to gander mountain to look at scopes they had a  ta31rco marine corp rifle sight it is the 4x with dual illumination and the killflash and red chevron mounted on a bushmaster optic ready carbine. I first checked it against the dall sheep they had mounted at the front door and it came on target pretty fast with both eyes open , then I checked it against objects on the dark ceiling and it was great . then I found some moving targets in the store and found with both eyes open I could aquire a sight picture amazingly fast. I stepped it off to the front of the store and it was around 100yds to the wild game mounts . so my personal initial opinion is I doubt this optic would be my first choice if I were kicking in doors ( aimpoint or eotech have this market cornered ) but for my every day roaming the woods rifle I think it will be perfect.
you have to look through one to really appreciate it.

I see you're from Il. so please tell me these "moving targets" weren't people?

TIA

I would say the best ACOG depends on your rifle and shooting needs.  As an all around model I really like my
TA33R-8.  I have mine on a 1 in 7 twist 16" Colt.

I am definitely keeping my eye on the new TA44S 1.5x mini ACOG for mounting on my 10.5" SBR though.
