What would be the best twist rate for a 16 inch barrel, 1/9 or 1/7?  I shoot a lot of 55 grain stuff, but will also shoot heavier bullets from time to time.

You are new so before somebody answers in typical ARF.com fashion I will "Help a brother out".

1/9 is fine for most shooting up to about 69gr. stuff. Some say their 1/9 shoots 77gr bullets fine.

1/7 is prefered if you plan on shooting the heavies like 75gr and 77gr.

I always try to stay one step aheadof the game so to speak. Heavies are the wave of the future. If the mil stays with the 5.56 it will move toward a standard 75gr. OTM or a 77gr. OTM type projectile.

I would only have a 1/7 twist myself but thats just my .02 and you will get a lot of that here.

+1 to the above statement.

+1 to you're about to get dupe/beatadeadhorse/omg/wtf? slammed for asking this question.  It is asked every other day or so if not more often.

All my ARs are 1/9. As was said before, 1/9 for most versatile (mine shoot 40gr just as well as the 69gr), 1/7 for heavier rounds. I don't know if they are "the wave of the future" but it really depends on what you shoot. My 3 ARs are for:

24" long-range and varmint (40gr to 62gr)
16" hunting and plinking (40gr to 66gr)
16" competition (62gr)

Based on what I shoot, I prefer the 1/9, though I have thought of replacing my competition AR with a 1/8 just based on the heavier bullets I always use, but don't want to limit myself to a 1/7. As said before, this is just my .02, and read AMMO ORACLE!

1/9 for a dedicated varmit rifle, MAYBE.  Many will say 1/7 barrels will shoot 40 grain bullets just fine, and that the whole "bullet jackets flying apart" thing isn't likely to happen.

Definitely 1/7 if you are going chrome lined, or looking to have a "fighting" rifle or even a general purpose rifle.  Like others have said, 1/7 handles all the normal loads (55, 62 grain) as well as the heavier stuff without breaking a sweat.

In short, unless you need a dedicated varmint rifle, 1/7 is the winner.

prefer the 1/7 myself. don't find any loss in accuracy with 55gr, so don't see a reason to switch.

Personally I think a 1:8 or a long 1:7 would be the best of all if you want to shoot 45-77 grain loads.

I've heard that 55grn m193 is the 'general' load and shoots well out of any twist barrel.

The real answer is that it depends on the end user, what type of ammo they will be shooting and what they want to be able to do with their AR...
