651, 652, 653, 654.  Or restore an SP1 carbine.

Personally, I'd have ADCO cut it to 14.7" and permanently attach a flash hider, then do a 654.

Mine (please excuse the A2 lower, I really need to get off my ass and put the LPK in another NDS lower):

+1 for an SP1...only I would make the concession of a smaller front pin and use a combo of a NDS 601 lower and either a matching NDS 604 or a Colt 604 upper

you can also get away with using a plastic stock on it which is much less expensive than any alloy you're likely to find

...of course this is all depending on the condition of the barrel, and what (if any) other parts you have already.

No, no, no. All this is far too much effort for you at this point sir. I think it is best served sending it to me as a birthday gift for this month as I am 16in carbine retro barrel poor at the moment. but have a 604 upper that needs company!

No? Ok, I tried.

Well, I have many of the upper and a few lower parts for a quasi-6001. Would have to get a slabside NoDak.

I'd hate to have this barrel cut down for a mil 14.5" config.

I thought I saw an IDF 16" 1/12 somewhere...

Thanx for the suggestions!

how bout just putting on some 607 hand guards and an A1 flash hider and call it good?
Be sort of like this, I love those hand guards.

Great idea!!!! Oh, wait... already did one of those with an original 3-prong FH. Talk 'bout a sweet handling carb! And yes, those shorty HGs really turn some heads.

This might be the pic you saw. VAAR posted it for me (and of course I stole it).

I'm sorry, but that's a 14.5" barrel.

SP1 carbine Photoshopped for comparison.

Great 'comparison there!

Now I'm back to square one alpha...  kinda...

I would chop it down to 12.5 and build an XM-177E2 or chop it to 12" and do an IDF build.

That's why I suggested having it chopped to 14.7" and pinned.

Build it into a 653 Clone. By the way, my barrel is a Bushmaster Superlight chrome lined 4150 CMV barrel.

Nice build there!. I'll keep your pic for future considerations.

I think I'm gonna back off on making a decision on this barrel for now. I have a couple of other retros that are close to the assembly and finishing stages (604 & M16A1).

Bottom line, I don't want to cut this barrel!

Regardless, I truly appreciate all the suggestions and assistance!!!

I completely agree with this sentiment.  Keep original parts original; there are plenty of Bushmaster lightweights still being made if you need to cut something.  If an SP1 clone doesn't catch your fancy, there's nothing too terribly wrong with an inch-and-a-half-too-long 65x-series carbine.

That's comforting. I do have a 16" with the short tri-HGs and it's a great and light lil' carbine.

Maybe I need to start another thread, but let me ask this...

All the gov 'pencil' carbine 1/12 barrels I've seen documented are 14.5" or shorter. I have found two SP1 models with this barrel, R6001 and R6003. But so help me, I've read somewhere of these being used on M16s. Was it on one of the USAF, SF or IDF variants?

Regardless, even if I have to build a 'long' barreled quasi-retro or another 'fit my bill' carb, I'm not cutting this 'un!

So much to learn and much too late...

The Diemaco / Colt Canada C8SFW and C8CT are the only military AR variants I know of off the top of my head that use 16" barrels, but neither is a lightweight profile.  If there's another, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to educate me.

Dont cut a original colt 16" sp1 barrel. sell it to some one that needs it for there sp1. then buy a new lightwieght barrel in the size you want. I'd do a A1 carbine out of it.
