If one allows from the earlier Best General Purpose Optics Discussion that a BAC ACOG is at this point in time one of the better all around optics (Aimpoint and Eotech being better for close and 3 to 10+ power scopes have their advnatages at a distance)... what is the best general purpose upper for an AR15/M16 (with issuses of Tittle II firearms not being a primarly consideration).

The Commando lenght (and shorter) uppers have sufficent reduction in velocity that they are best considered for limited applications with iron sighs or one of the Aimpoint / Eotechs.

With the same reasoning, while I like my 20" HBAR for shooting full auto, it is a long way from a general purpose upper.

Regards
John

Reference General Purpose AR Discussion which is a wider ranging project (but still a bad influnce on the check book)

I'm no wizard, there are many more around here w/ much more technical knowledge, and or firearm history info, under their belts.  My current favorite, though would a 16" mmidlength system.  A lil' extra "reach", but still short and handy, some favor the 18" for the same reason.  I'll stay a lil' shorter.

my .02, -S2

My personal view is the 14.5" barrel is the best compromise for CQB to field distances.

I dont think a 6.8mm upper is the best "general purpose" upper as there is no ammo available.  That would seem a bit like a "specialised upper" to me Chen. [;)]

That LMT MRP package is a pretty close to my idea of a perfect GP upper for a donut.

16" 6920 upper w/ MRE.  At least until I can afford one of those LMT MRP's...

Mine would be built with a barrel that does not exist...yet.

1/7 twist 16 inch midlength with chrome lining.  Barrel profile would probably be light underneath and out to .750 past the fixed front sight.  KAC  medium FF RAS.  Flat-top with M4 feed cuts.  Magpul M93 stock.  TD battlegrip and foregrip.  LMT carrier and bolthead.  ARMS 40 or perhaps another quality spring loaded rear flip up.  ARMS 19S with TA31.  Some sort of surefire light.  Ammo would be 75-77 grain NATO pressure OTM.

I'd have to second 123whisper, except I'd stick with a regular bolt and carrier for parts availability.  And I'd have to specify pre-ban with a vortex or phantom. Pistol grip could be anything.

If you couldn't do pre-ban with the M93 stock and FH, then I'd go bare muzzle and a CavArms C1 stock in coyote brown, with matching grip and rail covers.

Pre-ban / post-ban do not apply as is on Tittle II receiver ....

Thanks for the ideas.  The new postings on the one part upper / rail system with barrel change options being give a close look also (depending on how the wallet holds out as also playing with a .308 rifle ...).

You can purhcase a post ban compliant M93 stock in whatever length you want.  After the ban it can be converted back to collapsable by just shipping it back to Rich.

Cool.  I've been off the boards for a while and missed that.  When will CavArms start making them in colors?
