Stick to USGI 20- and 30-rd pre-ban mags. All of the manufacturers are fine except Cooper. Ensure there are no dings, dents, feed lip cracks, or broken floorplates / floorplate tabs.
Check out the mag FAQ at the top of this discussion forum. Where to buy mags? Check out the "AR15 Magazines" section of the "Equipment Exchange" (click on the link in the top right corner of this page.) Lots of decently priced mags in good shape there. You can also find them at gun shows, but watch what you're buying. Sometimes they're grossly overpriced ($28.00 for beat-up mags), or crappy (all I could find at the recent Market Hall show in Dallas were dented and dinged mags with feed lip cracks.) Buy USGI, e-mail the address at the bottom of my post for a price list. Ammoman.com has AR mags sometimes you could check there also. Lauer Custom Weapons (click on Industry and to their section and see if they still have them) had some good prices on the British mags that are supposed to be as good as USGI (don't know myself if that is true). I think they are steel, tough, so they will be heavier and might be prone to surface rust.

Buy ONLY USGI mags, at least until you have all the USGI mags you'll ever want. Only then should you consider anything else, and then only for range use or to "collect." USGI mags (okay, and the British steel USGI-type mags) are the only mags reliable enough for duty use.
