Thanks for the replies.
I also found the Burris FF2 for $155 on ebay. Money is always a factor, and I know $50-$100 is a drop in the hat as far as optics are concerned, but my wife and I just had a baby and I've already spent $1k on the rifle. Will spending $250 on the Bushnell, Nikon or Leupold make that much of a difference? FWIW, I'm not set on any one scope... I'd just like to spend as little as possible for a quality piece. The rifle will mostly be used for target/plinking, but I do plan to take it out for the occasional hunt. |

I just picked this Aetec from Simmons. I wanted side focus:
LINK I have been very pleased with the 1-5x Simmons shotgun scope that is mounted on my AR, so I didn't have any qualms about picking another one. I am currently using a Bushnell and the rear bell has come loose. When you rock the bell, you can see the point of aim shift several inches.  It was priced around $180, IIRC, wholesale, at Jerry's Sport Center. (It is going on a Ruger 10-22) |

Oddly enough, this scope is on the same order. An associate picked this for his elk rifle. I also ordered the Nikon Monarch for another associate a couple months ago. Seems there is a meeting of the minds on this thread...

Right. The Monarch, IMHO, is the "best bang for the buck" right now. The scope was popular and sold for more when they came out, so don't let the low price fool you.... Nikon is revamping their Monarch line this year and this scope is one of the older units, but it's still a great scope in it's own right. Good shooting!! |

I picked up a FFII last year with the binoculars. Outstanding value, and I think it beats the heck out of any Leupold in the same price range. Nikon makes a good scope too in that price range, as does Sightron. I looked at all of them and went with the Burris. |

Primos are hunting calls. Probably just a promo for them. The new Monarch line is coming out and the older version, like the 3-9x I linked, is left over. But, once they are gone, their gone. The NikonUSA webpage has the "new" Monarchs listed, and they aren't making a 3-9x any more. |

I can't say enough good things about my Burris FFII 3-9x40. I've compared it pretty extensively to my buddy's Leupold VX-II and found that the Burris has slightly better light trans at low light conditions, optics are at least as good or better, has the Ballistic Plex reticle, and FULL lifetime warranty just like Leupy. Everyone has the GPS deal going as well. Heck, buy one and I'll buy the GPS from you!

I've been looking at this scope and I'm wondering about going up to 50mm. I have shakey eyes [seriously, I have some nystagmus] and I only got an AR this year. From having once owned an expensive telescope, size=light. Is the 50mm going to be a tad brighter, and hopefully less tiring on the eyes? Or is there a drawback to going up to 50mm? I would think the increase in size going from 40 to 50mm would also allow more light in. But I’m really not qualified to give out advice on magnified optics seeing how this is my first scope and I’m still learning myself. Can anyone in the know help out Walsh? |

What's the main difference between the Nikon Prostaff and Monarch 3x9 scopes. I know there is about a $60 less cost for the Prostaff. Is there a significant difference to warrant the extra cost?

One thing I don't like about the Rifleman is its 1/2 MOA clicks. The VX-I is pretty much in the same ball game as far as $$$$ and has 1/4 MOA clicks. 1/2 MOA just happens to be one of my little peeves.

I do agree with you there. Still it's a great scope for the money. Optics are clear and it always returns to zero and the adjustments are true. |
