I'm new to this AR addiction (and the need gets stronger each day) so please bear with me...

My new and first AR, a Bushmaster M4'gery, has had about 350 rounds through it and is showing some battering on the buffer in a ring matching the bolt carrier.

Is it normal for the Bolt Carrier to batter the buffer?

Yes.
The carrier is being blown back against the buffer, metal on metal.
It makes a scratchy looking ring mark on the face of the buffer.
Normal.

This is not my pic and I don't know who on the boards to give credit for it...

Check the back of the bolt carrier for any sharp areas or burrs in the areas indicated. Burrs in this area can cause the type of wear you're observing. A circular mark from the carrier is normal, but if it's chipping/scratching up the face of the buffer you may need to deburr the carrier. In the pic you can see the buffer retainer cutout area is deburred by slightly rounding.

I took the pic. But, as for as I am concern, it is Public Domain. Feel free to us it without giving credit. I used other peoples pics many times before without giving credit. Fair turnaround.

Also, I would like to add that a person should Not underestimate how much damage a TINY burr can do to the buffer face. If you feel the SLIGHTEST burr in the areas indicated by the arrows, it needs to be removed.

Normal, normal, normal, normal, normal.....

Somebody will probably be along here soon to say it is'nt, but I have two rifles with the same exact "symptom", and had a Colt HBAR witht the same "symptom". I've thousands of round through them all, with no problems....

The bolt carriers I've polished/deburred were done with a two-sided fingernail polishing board I got from the drugstore for $1.29 and it works great...

The bolt carrier had a bur on it, right at the slot, like the DarkStar/G35 pic shows. Debur and polish and I am good to go...

Here is a pic of the buffer...
