Hey folks,
I am about to deploy and I am making my "Coming Home Wish List" on fire arms I want to buy. Currently the 2 items I am looking forward to buy are the "Kimber Desert Warrior" in .45 and also the Barrett M468 in 5.56. My questions are.....

A) Can any one give me some info on the Barrett as in reliability and service?
B) Are the just an "Overpriced" rifle and would I be better off with a Bushmaster or Panther?
C) Would 6.8 be a better caliber to choose from the 5.56?

Thanks for the help fellas.

Only a few people would know.  As far as I know, no one on this board has a Barrett M468 upper as they are priced really high compared to say a custom built 6.8 upper by Wes at MSTN.
B) Are the just an "Overpriced" rifle and would I be better off with a Bushmaster or Panther?
The Barrett M468 does seem to be of nice quality.  I just think people think it is overpriced.  As for any comparison that would be out the window since the Barrett is a 6.8SPC gun and the Bushmaster and Panther are 5.56 guns.  But if it was between the Panther and the Bushmaster I would choose Bushmaster any day of the week and twice on Sunday.  Also, keep in mind that a Barrett upper alone might buy you a complete Bushmaster rifle or two.
C) Would 6.8 be a better caliber to choose from the 5.56?
Here's where I think you are confused.  The Barrett M468 only comes in 6.8SPC.  Hence its name, M4(6.8).  As for which is better that would be up to you.  I would go with 5.56 for the availability of ammo.  But that's becuase I like to go out and shoot regularly.  The 6.8SPC has ammo out there but not at the same level as 5.56 ammo.  Ultimately the decision will be up to you but you can't go wrong with any of the choices, except for the Panther.

Thanks for the help fellas.

If you want a 6.8 rifle, you will either need to shoot less often or spend more on ammo. There is a significant price difference between 5.56 and 6.8.

Thank you for the input. And I do stand corrected, I figured the M468 to come in ether 6.8 or 5.56. Thanks for the correction. As for the price, you are right, they are very pricey! I seen a few of the Black Water guys in Iraq sportin Barret 468 uppers on there Rifles during CPA escort missions during OIF 2-3. They claimed the damage from the round was awsome. I shot kills when the engaged the chest area. Well again, thanks for the input.hug.gif

Well the 6.8SPC is the bigger round of the two.  If you really want a 6.8, I would go to Wes at MSTN and check out his custom builds.  90% of the 6.8SPC guns I have seen have been built by Wes.  Here is a link to his ad in the EE concerning his 6.8SPC uppers.

He can basically put any component you want on it for you.  Let us know what you end up with.

I have a Barrett M468 and I love it. There is an old Dodge truck I shoot at on a farm and I was impressed with the damage it does to it compared to my friend's 5.56. I will be out there again this weekend and I'll take some pictures of it.

What mags are those in your M468?  How reliable are they?

Thanks,
Spooky

They are the original 30 round mags that came with the gun and they say "6.8 Barrett" on the side. I haven't had any problems with them.

I see it isn't the Barrett lower. The lowers have the Barrett logo laser engraved on the right magwell.
At least the ones I built did. They may have changed, but I doubt it. There were over 500 lowers in the vault when I left there.

You can build an upper for little over $500 if you look for parts. The SIR by itself is $400. No thanks.

Yes it is, it's a complete M468 from Barrett. I'll take a better picture later.
