I have my Bushmaster M4 on the bench right now, waiting to get a new stock.  While it's down I went to look if the FSB was canted or not...  My rear sight has to be adjusted a bit to one side but I thought that was the replacement carry handle's fault.

I noticed that bare handed I can twist the barrel on the receiver enough to feel it "clunk" to one side or the other but looking at it it's not very evident.   With my BUIS (chopped carry handle) and Red Dot optic I went to measure how much the barrel is actually rotating.  Using my Optic as a bore sight I read the click correction in the rear sight and I can make the barrel shift from needing 9 clicks to 12 clicks of windage.

So 3 clicks worth of movement (roughly 1 1/2" at 100yds)

I have to fix this but I don't have the tools right now.  Meanwhile, does this barrel movement cause my AR to be grounded or will the optic still be un-affected?  Is it unsafe to shoot?

If it were mine, I would definitely not shoot it until tightening the barrel nut properly unless you need to shoot it.  Probably best to just order a GI armorer's wrench and an armorer's action clamp from Bushmaster, and then torque it down properly, IMO.

Did the rifle come to you new like that?

It's a year old,  but I just noticed it this morning...

I won't shoot it till it's tightened down, there is a shop or 2 near me that does AR work... I'll see how much they charge to tighten it up before I buy anything.

I don't know how long it's been like this, only have about 2200 rounds thru it.

It cost me $30.00 before I learned how to do it myself and bought the tools.

Thanks for the replies...

$30 isn't too bad but learning to do it myself would be cool too...

I'll ponder who/what/how to get it tightened up...  Would probably be as good a time as any to get a FF railed handguard installed...  I'll sleep on it.

Okay, I have to post this...

I already ordered a barrel wrench, figured I'll try it myself first and if I really run into a problem I have a cop buddy who's an armorer... Kind of a last resort, I don't want to bother him if I don't have to.

So I call up this gunshop near me,  knowing they had a guy who "builds" AR's on site...  And apparently he's gone, so the guy that answers the phone say's to tighten the barrel they would need to remove the front sight block and flash suppressor in order to get the gas tube out and it would cost me $45 or up depending on how it goes

OMG... so like I said, I'll try it myself.  I've always got you guys

Good news for me, my favorite gun store now has an armorer on site.

Guess I should've checked before I bought the wrench .
