Should I put any thing like lube or never seize on the barrel extension before I place it into the upper?

I never have.

I do. Military manual says yes too. Any molybdenum disulfide grease like you'd find at an auto parts store will do. Apply to barrel extension and threads. Torque 3 times before final alignment of the barrel nut. I used some Anti-Sieze. That silver stuff in a silver bottle you can get at any auto parts store. Just brush a little on the threads and wipe off the excess when done.
