The manual should really tell the truth:

Torque barrel nut to 30 foot-pounds and then continue to torque the nut until the gas tube
can be inserted into the upper receiver.

It almost never lines up just right at exactly 30 foot-pounds of torque.

Personally I follow the Milspecs. and have for years.

Twice to 30 ft lbs.
Then lastly up to 80 ft lbs if necessary for alignment of the barrel nut (minimum of 31 ft lbs for final torque though)-remember though torque readings must be done when wrench is in motion not from a stop.
