Am I the only one who keeps having the same conversation with friends and family regarding the AWB...

Reasonable and intellegent people are just misinformed and have been mislead about the AWB and they keep telling me that automatic weapons will be flying out of gun shops come Sept.

I've needed to explain the details of the AWB to a few people so far.....then I take the time to lecture them on having such a strong opinion on something they know nothing about and putting blind trust in the scumbag media.....

*end rant*

Personally, I'm hoping for a flood of full auto UZI's being available in every car trunk.

Hell, I've had that discussion with a couple friends that post HERE semi-frequently.

Its not just the sheeple who are misinformed.

rgr...I wish they were right and I was wrong.....full auto M4s for $900 would be sweet but everyone would spend 10x more on ammo

And therein lies the beast with the AWB. The anti-gun stooges got the new classification made of semi-automatic assault weapons to go along with the AWB. Before the AWB, all assault weapons were generally thought of as being fully automatic, and that is what much of the general population thinks. So, those who don't give much thought to guns anyway see no reason why "reasonable" people need fully automatic weapons. You and I know the foolishness of this attitude, but that is what prevails none the less. Then with the antis getting semi-automatic look-a-likes labeled as assault weapons also, they got the AWB passed and most people didn't care squat.
They are trying the same tactic to get the AWB renewed as well as getting the .50 BMG banned. Not that it has ever been used in a crime, but if the antis can get a weapon labeled as an evil "sniper rifle" capable of bringing down the space shuttle in orbit, then they have opened the door wide open for banning any weapon so long as they can make outrageous claims to its POTENTIAL deadliness and give the weapon an evil sounding name. As much as I hate to admit it, the antis are not stupid people, they know exactly what they are doing and how to achieve their goal. It has worked for them before, and I am afraid that it will work for them again.
Link Posted: 9/6/2004 11:29:26 AM EST
Never underestimate the power of the major media and its ability to sway and condition normal people who are simply living their daily lives. The anti's know this to a much higher degree than our side is willing to give them credit for. The Sugerman's and Brady's of this world are the ideological brethern of those who program that black box that most people watch for approx. five hours a day. Just wait until the latter part of this week for the various nightly news stories concerning "semi-automatic assault weapons". The ultimate oxymoron. By Monday the 12th, you would think the sky was falling. It's going to be an interesting week.

Agreed! Had the same conversation with family members.

Also...all you anti-gunners (yeah, like they're reading this! HA!) PLEASE STOP SAYING POLICE OFFICERS AGREE WITH YOU! I know MANY officers/co-workers who HATE the ban. I do not know one officer that supports the ban.

The only LE who support the ban are the chiefs who get/want funding! I'd hardly call many of these chiefs law enforcement anyway! Politician, yes. Cop, NO!

First of all, I own a transferable M16 rifle. I've had coworkers say, "Man, if that ban expires, your M16 won't be worth sh**!" I then have to inform them that the '94 Ban had nothing to do with NFA items.
Link Posted: 9/6/2004 1:46:26 PM EST
It's so rediculous, people have been so brainwashed by the liberal media. They think that if the AWB is not renewed, people will be roaming the the streets with full auto AK's. They watch too much TV!!
Link Posted: 9/6/2004 7:59:25 PM EST
Someone at the rifle range referred to my AR-15 as a "machine gun." I guess that was around the beginning of deer season though. Not all hunters are gun nuts, I guess. I was at the same range earlier today. About 7 people came and went while I was there, about 20 rifles fired, I had the only semi-auto.
Link Posted: 9/6/2004 8:51:23 PM EST
I've had talks like this many times and the latest just 2 days ago. A guy said he was at a gun show a week ago where they were selling M16's. I explained that they were semi auto AR15's and were legal. He then said that the AR seller lowered his voice and pointed to a stack of books he had on converting them to full auto. Some dealers don't help our cause at all and it's hard to get newbies to believe most gun owners don't want guns that are illegal. I make sure ALL my guns are 100% legal as I believe most of you do. How many times have you heard "all you have to do is file down the sear" line from hunter types that have no use for non-sporting guns.
We know that the worse thing about the ban was stopping new high cap mags from being sold to the public but most still think that machine guns will flood the streets if it's dropped.

Christ, try being on a college campus... its brutal.

The typical "you dont need an AK to hunt" is so common it makes me sick.

Of course there is such a thing.

The Second Amendment isn't about "sporting purposes."

I own weapons, not toys.

Weapons to defend myself, my family and my country. Not amusements, tools.

In Boston looking out across the Mass Turnpike, off the backside of the "Green Monster" in Fenway Park, Handgun Control, or some such group, has a GIANT, city-block-long billboard which has an ENORMOUS post-ban AK with the words "COMING SOON TO A SCHOOL NEAR YOU" and "reauthorize the assault weapon ban" underneath.

Now, I don't usually mind the hand-wringing drival that is normally placed up there, due to the fact that most of the crap HCI puts up on a monthly basis (it's their own billboard) there is pretty general, run-of-the-mill gun control bullshit. And, it's usually directed at the Neo Communists going to their college classes at BU every day. So, who really cares? However, this utter bit of lying nonsense made me drive off the road. I must've ranted for over an hour about that billboard to anyone who listened, and some who didn't. I was apoplectic. And, with the Red Sox going to the playoffs, sheeple by the thousands walk by that damn thing on the way to the games. I'm sure it'll give them pause.

This is what we're up against this week, boys. It can only get worse as the days wear on closer to the sunset. My hope is that IF the ban sunsets without another to take its place, I can cut down the AK and put it on my roof. I think it'd be put to better use than an HCI billboard.

God help us all.

Hmm, Boston?

That'd be in Massachusetts, right?

The state that's given us Ted Kennedy and John Kerry for Senators, and some second-string leftists like Barney Frank in the House?

I'm delighted Handgun Control, Inc is so clueless that they're spending their increasingly scarce advertising money "preaching to the choir." So what if they convince everyone who walks by to call and demand a renewal? You really think Kennedy, Kerry and the rest of those assholes were going to do anything else anyways?

This ban is dead.

Save your money for buying parts to build more ugly guns, and your energy to making sure that the Republicans continue to control the House of Representatives.

Yup, I cant count the number of times that Ive had it within the last few weeks. I do have to admit that I have been the person who brought up the subject, but it was nice to get people informed with the truth instead of the pile of crap they have 'learned' from the media.

One guy I was talking to was all excited because he was going to rush out and buy a 'M16 machine gun' as soon as he could after the 13th. After I told him that NFA stuff is already legal in UT and as long as you have time, money and paperwork you can own just about anything you like here, he mostly understood, but kept asking why the news keeps talking about machine guns and stuff. Then it was on to explain to him why a 'M16' costs $16k and a really nice 'AR-15' is about 1k.

Although the best one was...

Another guy I was talking to, a pretty avid hunter/outdoorsman type, about the expiration of the AWB was totally for the AWB, because it 'keeps machine guns off the streets'. I of course told him that the AWB has nothing to do with automatic firearms and really only changes the cosmetic looks of a rifle. He didnt believe me. I asked him when the last time he heard of a 'assault weapon' was used in a major crime. He started in about the losers that were 'sniping people with that M16 assault rifle'. I explained that that was one crime, a TEENY TINY percentage and that those two would have done that with any rifle/weapon they could have got a hold of. Even one just like his beloved deer hunting rifle. I asked him if they should ban ALL scoped rifles because they are so 'deadly accurate' and 'why would someone want to hunt with a scoped rifle... it isnt fair for the thing youre hunting!'. He asked, 'Who said its not fair?'

He still didnt understand why we would need a gun that held over 5-10 rounds. I asked him why he needs a truck that will do over 75mph top speed. 'There aren't many places that have a speed limit over 75 and 'all law-abiding citizens would repect that right?'. I asked him why he had three cars when his family only has two adults in it. 'You dont NEED three right?. Asked him why he has a big house with extra rooms that he doesnt use in it. Wouldnt a larger family be more comfortable in HIS house? Then he bit... hook, line and sinker when he said, 'Who are you to tell me how many cars I need or how big of a house to live in?' and I replied 'Who are you to tell me that I cannot have a 30 round mag or a bayo lug on my rifle?' He then asked what a bayonete lug has to do with the AWB.

Another Bingo!hippie.gif

I went downstairs, took out a 'post-ban' A2 style upper and a 'pre/no-ban' style upper. Handed him both and asked him to tell me which one was the 'deadlier' of the two and to tell me why one should be banned and the other not. He of course couldnt tell the difference between the two. I pointed to the Bayo lug and the flash hider and told him that those are the types of things banned in the AWB. He started asking questions on why would congress waste so much time, money and effort on banning things that have nothing to do with what the law sounds like it does...

Yea, ya have to be careful about what people 'think' they know about the ban.

I know we are all choir members here, but just wait and see who gets in office. If it's the K man from MA, you can be sure there'll be another Clinton like ban coming, that will be an expansion on what expires soon.
Link Posted: 9/7/2004 5:47:55 PM EST
The bad news is even if Kerry doesn't get in (and I see nothing to indicate he will), we still gotta do it all over again in four more years. The '94 ban is gonna be history in one more week, but the gun grabbers and the Powers That Be in the Democratic (oughta read Socialist) Party won't. Their favorite line is borrowed from a movie "I'M BAAAAAACK". They're never gonna give up on getting this ban made permanent, even if it does sunset. Like I said in another post. We didn't have the '94 ban until we had it.
Link Posted: 9/7/2004 6:25:03 PM EST
What do you think it would it take to repeal the 86' ban on all sweet azz guns?

If everyone is convinced that automatic weapons will be available again...someone might as well make automatic weapons available again, it should make no difference to "them"......am I right? Or am I right?
Link Posted: 9/7/2004 6:28:19 PM EST
The ironic thing it we try to convince everyone that AWB doesnt have to do with automatic weapons is we wished it did. Brand New M16's for $900 oh yeah!!!

Someone needs to make pro assault weapons commercials for television, kinda like the truth.com anti smoking commercials... That reminds me, I need a cigarett....

Man, it's great to hear there are a few of us that know what's going on!!! Great thread and great replies everyone, I love it!!

What is scary, like someone said, I know many people that own guns and even have conceal permits and still don't know what the AWB is.

And another thing is no gets excited like me when I talk about collaspible stocks, flash hiders, ammo drums and bayo lugs!! Anyone else getting the same reaction?

I just tell them that its one of my preferred hunting weapons. Works great for hogs
Link Posted: 9/10/2004 7:04:17 AM EST
In PA you can't hunt with semis so many look at them as "useless."

I had a thread up the other day where my wifey and I got into a heated discssion regarding AW. She is all for pistols, shotguns, bolt guns, but has that icky feeling when I mention AWs. Of course I had to point out to her later that we have several in the safe. She listens to the damn media too much and things that the 94 AW ban = banning of machineguns (which I want one of those too, so..).

I've had many a conversation with people about the AW ban and many are confused, unsure, or just don't want to hear it.

95% of people, when you finally can get them to understand what the AWB really bans, and that it is not about machine guns but cosmetics say, "But that's stupid? Why all the fuss?"

The 5% who, when they finally understand the details, still are for it will say, "Well, at least it is a start, we have to do SOMETHING." They just want to ban some guns, any guns, and hopefully, later, all guns. Those you cannot do anything about, they are too stupid to breathe.

But the media, under the direction of the Bradys, VPS, and that bunch (who work quite closely, organize their propaganda very well), have done a great job of convincing the public the AWB is about machine guns.

And they quote polls. Have you seen these polls? "Do you think 13 yr old kids should be able to shoot up schools with machine guns?" Of course not, no sane person does. So, you check no. They say, ahah, 75% support the AWB! Well, I have to wonder about that 25% that wants 13 yr olds to shoot up schools with machine guns. This is the "Have you stopped beating your wife?" technique. The questions are loaded, their arguments are bogus.

And have you noticed, when you point out their mistakes (very cleverly crafted "mistakes") and the ridiculousness of the cosmetics thing, they reply, "Well, I'm not a gun person, I don't really know all these details about guns." You need to jump on that... "THAT is why you should not be deciding on what guns people should and should not have, you do not know enough to decide this, any more than you should tell doctors how to do brain surgery, or Steven Hawkings how to do long division."

You're lucky. At the college I'm at, if you say the word "gun" (or even "bang"), one the Campus Safety officers (student wanna-be cops) will speed-dial 911 and the local cops send their SWAT team.

Anyways, AWB was just poorly named. May FHB (flash hider ban) or GLB (grenade launcher ban) or BLB (bayonet lug ban) or ASB (adjustable stock ban) or maybe even IIIBIDNLHIL (It is illegal because I do not like how it looks). It's all in the name.

I have the same problem. People feel so strongly about it, but you ask them "What exactly is the ban about?". They have no idea.

Heres an article today in our newspaper, The Courier Journal:

Welcome Back AK-74s

Picture this dramatic scene in Washington two days ago: 19 police chiefs from all over the country, plus police officers and representatives of all the major police organizations, gathering to ask Congress to renew the 10-year ban on assault weapons. It's due to expire next week.

"Semi-automatic assault weapons pose a grave risk to our officers and the community they are sworn to protect," the International Association of Chiefs of Police says.

Then picture this: all the police being dissed by GOP congressional leaders.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay said, "It (the ban) will expire Monday, and that's that." He added, "If the President asked me, it would still be no."

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist made this stupefying comment: "I think the will of the American people is consistent with letting it expire, so it will expire."

Never mind that polls consistently have found that between 68 and 74 percent of Americans support renewal.

Critics of the ban, led by the National Rifle Association, say it shouldn't be renewed because it contains loopholes. But that's no reason to "take a significant step back for law enforcement and public safety," as the police chiefs say, and allow weapons like Uzis and AK-47s back on the streets.

It's obvious what Congress should do: Renew the ban, then work to pass a stronger one.

Meanwhile, gun manufacturers are ready with their new lines of assault weapons. The Consumer Federation of America reports that the new models will be cheaper and more efficient than before the ban.

And in order to spur sales, Beretta will give two, free, 15-round magazines to customers who purchase of two of its weapons.

Man, people always have "assault weapons" at Knob Creek. Most (usually at least half) people there when i go have semi-auto guns. Seen some guys bring some actual machine guns a few times.
