Anyone have any experience with Winchester ballistic silver tip ammunition?  This stuff is a little pricey  same as the hornady tap rounds  15.00 per 20 hock.gif

Is this a really accurate round also how accurate are the TAP rounds  16"/9  out of a RRA

tag to answer at home with my logbook.  did a comparison test including the silver tips last week in my varminter.

ETA:

Ok, the 50 gr. Ballistic SilverTip (winchester supreme) went 7/8" for 5 rounds at 100 yds. from my 24" 1 in 9 varminter.  That was the largest of four 5 round groups. It was the third best ammo I tested back to back.  The best was the 50 gr. Speer TNT (federal premium) whose largest 5 round group was 5/8".  Here is how the 9 that I tested ranked:

Federal Premium 50gr. Speer TNT                          5/8"

Federal Premium 55gr. Nosler Ballistic tip             3/4"

Winchester Supreme  50gr. Ballistic SilverTip       7/8"

Winchester SuperX 53gr Hollow Point                        1"

Winchester Supreme 69gr HPBTM                              1"

Winchester SuperX PSP                                        1 1/8"

Federal Premium Trophy Bonded Bear Claw        1 3/8"

Winchester Supreme 40gr Sierra Varminter HP  1 1/2"

Winchester Q3131A                                             1 5/8"

Each of the various measurements represents the largest 5 round group of four groups fired, from the bench, with a bipod.  There was a 5 mph crosswind, at 85F, 44% RH.

Every rifle I own has a definite preference for one particular brand, but this varminter went 1 MOA or better with 5 brands, and under 1.75 MOA with all 9, so I am pleased.  Not too bad for an out-of-the-box BM.

Hope this helped. I will try the TAP as soon as I can get some.

My experiance is, yes, it's good stuff for accurate shooting.  If I remember correctly, with a scope at 100yds my DPMS turned in it's first ever 4 shot clover leaf group.  I can't shoot like that on a regular basis and that was it's best performance of the day, but in general it shot under 1" usually X ring and I never missed the 10 ring on a target.

You know, if you reload, 100 NBST bullets cost 15 dollars.

Until I got into reloading, it was the most accurate ammo I could buy.  Black Hills match ammo didn't even do as good for me as this stuff.  Once you start loading you'll find the average cost per round of quality ammo you make to be near that of MilSurp.  That can add up quick if accuracy is what you are after and shoot for.

You'll never "save" money but you will be able to shoot far more for the same money.
