Pics up shortly.

I had a MI railed handguard on my AR-10.  Then I started to realize that I do not need the Picatinny rails, so why add weight.

Went back and weighed the OEM plastic handguards; 4.5 oz.

Took the railed handguards off; 13.5 oz.

Hmm.

I had already removed the Vortex Viper PST 1-4 scope and replaced it with a Leupy Mark AR mod 1 1.5-4 SPR.  That reduced the weight.

I am trying to keep my weapons as light as possible.

So I just reduced it by another 9 oz by going back to OEM handguards.

She comes out to about 9 lbs with scope and sling now.  Still heavy, but much better that it was.

Pics up in a few.

Anybody else trying to keep their weapons lightweight?

Your rifle looks like mine, except for a larger scope and bipod. No extra crap. Bipod is QD so it is in my knapsack until needed. I like my Prostaff mil-dot 4-12 though. It may be a tad over-glassed for everyday use, but I do some long range plinking 500-800 yds often enough to justify it.
K.I.S.S. works for me.

I recently purchased one and my goal is to lighten it up. It's a T with a 24" barrel. I am looking for a stripped upper with no forward assist to build a lighter upper with a light weight barrel in 7mm-08.  Can anyone give input on a light weight forearm, rifle length, carbon fiber or alum.  Or seems Armalite handguards are less abundant then a DPMS style. I will be watching this for input by others who has lightened one.

The barrel, BCG, receiver set, & handguards are the heaviest components, in that order.  Here are some common approaches to lightening each:

Barrel

Lightweight profile
Fluting
Dimpling
Carbon Fiber wrap (most expensive)

BCG
Lo-mass (requires a total approach with gas porting, buffering, and springing)

Receiver Set
No forward malfunction persist
Lightening cuts (Seekins/Lancer)
Smaller, shorter receivers (Colt 901/DPMS G2)
CMMG has a very lightweight receiver set on the Mk.3

Handguards
Aggressive lightening cut aluminum like MI, Sampson, Fortis, etc.
Carbon Fiber like Lancer, AP Rhino
