Ive got a preban upper with cross-thread damage to the end where the FS goes and want to cut it off and re-thread it. IM wondering if it would be soft enough to run a die on. I never learned how to chase threads on the lathe so running a die would be the most convinient for me. Anyone know what the thread is?

I think there the same hardness throughout the steel. Case hardened would be the hammer and trigger. Ask Kurt (of Kurt Kustom Firearms) over in the Industry forums what he uses to thread a barrel after shortening them. He does excellent work and really knows his stuff.

Barrels are not case hardened.

Barrels are not case hardened. (That would be dumb because it has to flex and would shatter the hardened layer on the first shot.) If your muzzle threads are screwed up, just chase them with a 1/2x28 die.
