NO my preban Sporter 2 is nice and black.

They are all gray from the factory.

my 1998 Match Target was gray also

Every pre-94 Colt Sporter I've ever seen or owned was a dark gray color, not a true black. I would guess that any truly black pre-94 Sporter receiver has been refinished at some time.
