I read the ammo FAQ and did a search, some people have mentioned they can shoot mil-surp ammo in a .223 chamber. I just want to make sure before I order in bulk.

Anyone have sucess using 5.56 ammo in an Oly with the SAAMI chamber?

Thanks

I have an Olympic FAR-15 - I really don't know if its a strictly SAAMI barrel - it says 556 on it so maybe not. I have had pretty good luck shooting Greek Olympic SS109 through it. Accurate and no malfunctions to speak of.

Of course you can, but don't trust me. Write Oly rather than depending on some guy on a BB. The staff at Oly is small and they still give personal attention if you have a problem or question. I have shot thousands and thousands of mil. surp. 5.56 NATO rounds through my Oly PCR3. It has 5.56 on the barrel and it shoots 5.56 just fine even though it is indeed a .223 chamber. It eats M193 like candy. Never EVER had a problem. If something was going to happen, it would have happened by now.

You have to make sure what model PCR you have. Most of their guns are 5.56 chambered, but the PCR-1's are not. They are minimum SAAMI .223 chambered. If it is indeed a SAAMI .223 chambered gun, you should not shoot 5.56 out of it. Call Oly to make sure. Ghost

RobWis, What are the barrel stampings on your Oly? Unless it says "SUM", than you have a mil-spec 5.56 NATO chamber. Read their catalog, and web site. The ONLY barrels from that are .223 SAMMI chambers are their Ultramatch (marked SUM) barrels. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I for got to mention that I have the PCR 5 that I bought new a few years ago. I was a bit confused as Oly suppossedly marks all of their barrells 5.56 (as mine is) according to this link, just scroll down to Olympic http://groups.msn.com/TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite/ar15brands.msnw?pgmarket=en-us That same link states that they didn't go to a 5.56 chamber until June 2001, and my lower is stamped "00" (I'm assuming that's a year stamp?). I just called Oly and told the guy I had a PCR 5 that I bought a few years ago. The guy didn't tell me which chamber it has, he just said it'll shoot both types of ammo. He asked if it had a "99" or "00" stamped on the lower and I said "00"...he reconfirmed, "it'll shoot either type." Guess I'll take his word for it and pick up 500 rounds of 5.56 to start with...

I would just call Oly and find out, just to be sure. Why take chances, right? They WILL know. Ghost

I have shot Federal XM193 through mine. Its a Oly M4 Stainless Steel barrel with the lower stamped PCR 00 indicating a 2000 year manufacture. I have looked at the shell casings and don't see any blown primers or other problems. As mentioned above I have heard this could have either chamber from different sources. Would be nice if Oly would publish this or where the "TheMarylandAR15ShootersSite" came up with their dates.
