I thought the military rejected the Beta mags because they were so fragile and not very reliable?
Why would they have a specification for a clear one?

Not sure at all which units use them, but the clear backing helps to identify how many rounds are left in the beta mag.

The US Army at least actually banned their use and purchase by units and individual soldiers. There was actually a saftey message on them a few years ago.

If they did, someone is not listening - because there is no shortage of them out there.
(learned this today) But there clear backing was at the request of the USMC, (which is not to say - expect these to be a general issue item). IMHO, Beta mags can best be used for LE, Home Defense, Range use, and ringing out a M16
. There are very few items in the world that can stand up to the abuse it will receive from a front line infantry soldier or Marine. That type of abuse can never realistically be seen in the civilian world.
