I don't, but I have shot off a round or two before my squishy earplugs have fit themselves to my ears. That's enough for me not to want to do it again.

Only the stupid people do it on purpose. Twenty+ years ago things were different.
As far as shooting it in your house in a real world scenario, auditory exclusion will set in and it won't be an issue. |

I'll fire off a couple round here and there, just to get a feel for the noise. You'd be surprised at the number of billybadasssnipershooters that couldn't hit the broadside of a barn after a shot without hearing protection ( wouldn't have any in the real world). If you do fire indoors, you'll get then high pitch whine, stunned sensation, but no permanent damage ( yes, I've done that. no, not intentionally.
BTW, I did an Army qual. with no protection ( like a dumbass, I forgot to put them in) 40 rnds times 20 shooters. The annoying ringing stopped after an hour. No perm. damage. |

I've tried every caliber my dad, brother, and I have w/o earplugs just to see what it's like.
.223/5.56 isn't bad because the ringing in my ears went away after a couple seconds. I will NEVER, EVER, EVER fire another .30 '06 w/o ear protection. My ears rang for 6 hours and I had a headache the rest of the night. At the rife old age of 19, my hearing is already mediocre because of some minor medical problems when I was born (I still have tubes in my ears) so I do all I can to make sure I never shoot w/o hearing protection. Besides, if the S is actually HTF, your adrenaline will be pumping so much so that you probably won't even hear the shot (yes, damage will still be done, but you probably won't wince in pain like you would at the range) WIZZO |

RIIIIIIIIGHT, you just keep telling yourself that, soon you'll be the only one you can hear. Sorry it DID do damage, whether you believe it or not. I keep a pair of "ears" inside. I can hear better and protect my hearing at the same time. Audio Inclusion might keep you mind from registering the noise but the damage will still occur. Shoot smart, shoot safe. |

Back when I was young and stupid(er), I would frequently shoot my AK without ear protection, never really bothered me. Then I bought my first AR which was post-ban with some sort of brake on it. Took it out to shoot it the first time figuring it was going to be considerably quieter than the AK... fired one round, thats "1" round through the thing, and imediately put ear protection on and I have not fired any weapon at the range without wearing hearing protection since. It was painful.
Now of course the brake had a lot to due with it, but hey, lesson learned. So remember kids, always wear hearing protection. yeah. |

You must not be using bushmasters double y comp. I'd welcome a BAR mag full of 30'06 before 223 through that comp! Speaking of this topic how can you get your hands on those sweet military plugs that are custom made and drilled to eliminate painfull frequencies and accept the human voice range? How much? |

Hearing loss is a " cumulative " thing. A few shots (outdoors) here and there without protection proabably won't cause a " noticable " effect. Even a few hundred rounds may not cause a " noticeable " permantent hearing loss, although you may notice a temporary loss that will subside within a few hours or a few days. You've got zillions of auditory sensor cells in your ears and losing a few may not be be noticable. The problem is that every time you shoot without hearing protection, you WILL LOSE some of your sensory cells even though you don't notice. If you shoot a lot, then EVENTUALLY, as the years go by, the accumulated effect will s l o w l y begin to cause a subtle but noticeable loss. It will only get worse from there, not better. If you shoot indoors the damage can occur MUCH more rapidly. Using effective hearing protection will PREVENT this from happening or least reduce the effects. It's your choice. At LEAST make sure the kids have good earmuffs. |

Last sunday a freind (who really is deaf, BTW) was showing his wife how to shoot on of my M4gerys and as I was talking to someone without ONE of my plugs in.
