I missed this one, got a link?

ETA

Could not find anything with a ar15.com search, but did find this on a google search:

The uppers are various makes. I believe I saw some that were not marked, some were LK (I THINK) and a few were Colt. Same goes with the barrels. Most were SAK.

Those are rebuilds, LK uppers and SAK barrels are replacement parts.
Link Posted: 3/15/2006 6:48:16 AM EDT
They were complete A1 uppers w/b/bc/ch for $360.00 delievered. There was thread asking bout intrest in purchasiing & the Admins trashed it (wrong Forum) He said they range from New w/ cardboard tube in the bore to new, handling marks.

Ekie, IM sent.
Link Posted: 3/15/2006 8:16:56 AM EDT

I believe they just shipped out yesterday (also got an email from Tim), so some people may have them by the end of the week.

Link Posted: 3/15/2006 8:51:42 AM EDT
They turned out to be 100% colt marked etc and brand new. He sent me pics of them and they look fine... Ill see if I can upload them.

Here is what he told me when I asked about the markings and the replacement parts etc... "You are getting a Colt. Everybody got Colts. The only part marked is the barrel. These were made before anybody else was making M16 parts. The carrier is unmarked but the bolts are MPC marked. The uppers are unmarked."

Edit: "uppers are unmarked except for the Colt proofmarks on the right side below the carry handle".

Was told that some of them have barrels marked C MP C. Those are older ones, chrome chamber, none in the bore. If one of you guys gets one on those and wants a chrome bore, let me know, maybe we can do a trade? I am into A1's for nostalgia, not for practical use, so the older the better, and I have a few Colt complete chrome bore uppers.

Just for a heads up, factory original Colt M16A1 upper:

MP C = chrome chamber only (67-68) no forge code, flat firing pin
C MP C = chrome chamber only (68-71) no forge code, flat firing pin
C MP B = chrome chamber and bore (71-73) typically CK uppers (some CM) round firing pin
CHROME BORE = obvious (74-end of production) typically CH (some CM) round firing pin

If you get a upper with no forge code and a CHROME BORE marked barrel it is a rebuild. Barrel marking was changed to CHROME BORE in 1974, those should have a CH forge code, MPC bolts, C carriers, and a rounded firing pin head.

You start seeing MPC marked bolts and C marked carriers in 1967. The transition time frame was a close to a year and at least a few hundred thousand rifles though.

There is of course more to it then that, but that is most of the easy stuff to see.

Still waiting.

I've actually got three uppers that are in a "race" to get to my house - all three have shipped (one from Tim, one from Model 1 and one from ADCO).

I'm so excited - I hope they all arrive on Monday

w00t - just received mine!

Looks completely untouched, and with the original paper/cardboard thingy still in the barrel.

Barrel marked C MP CHROME BORE

I don't see one anywhere. Is there a secret spot I should be looking for?

(I'm looking in the place where my other, and more beat-up, used M16A1 upper that I already had, has a C in a square, with a triangle above)

CHROME BORE marked M16A1's typically had a CH forge code:

Nothing like that on mine - clear as a virgin's conscience.

I can take some pics if you like - I was planning to wipe it down with some oil later anyway and can snap a new shots if you like. Just let me know what part of it you'd like to see.

Figure we could ID it by description. Colt started using the CHROME BORE marking in 1974, and started using forge coded uppers in 1971. So sounds like a new barrel on rebuild.

1960's M16A1/XM16E1 uppers are a bit different. Easy way to spot one is to check and see if the front pivot pin lug is counter bored on the left side.

But, pics would be nice just the same.

Here are some pics. Anything that appears to be a blemish is likely from the oil or from light reflection. The upper appears to be completely new and unused - no brass marks on the bolt, no wear on the bolt or where the charging handle latches, nothing.

Upper - showing the paper rod from the barrel and the wrapper (which is dated 1980, btw).

Receiver.

Receiver.

Barrel.

Bolt and carrier.

1980 sounds good for a rebuild date. From the pictures I can see that the upper, firing pin, and carrier are 1960's parts. That is no forge code on the upper and counter bored front pivot pin. Firing pin is the old flat headed style. Carrier has the large firing pin retainer hole on the right side, also has the old two strike stake job, being an older part it may or may not have a C stamp on it. Compare those parts to modern ones and these details really stand out.

Looks to be an arsenal rebuild rather then a depot level job. New barrel and handguards. Refinished bolt/carrier group? Refinished port door and rear sight. Painted upper receiver.

I got my upper yesterday, Sat. March 18th. It looked so fresh I almost hated to put oil on it.

Damn mine hasnt arrived yet.. I just finished building a lower for it yesterday too... cant wait!

Ekie,

Could you explain the difference between an arsenal rebuild rather then a depot level job?

Thanks

Just the quality, some arsenal rebuilds could be confused with new. Don't know if the term is factually correct, I call the nice ones arsenals, and the ugly ones depot level. For instance, some of the nice ones are stamped RIA, or ANAD. RIA being Rock Island, and ANAD being Anniston. These have a thermal setting coating on the upper receiver, and can be black or gray. Have seen real ugly rebuilds, were the steel parts like the barrel and rear sight are reparked, and the upper receiver is spray painted with the port door closed, with over spray on the gas tube were it enters the upper.

Have not spent that much time on rebuilds, WpnsMan knows more about these then anyone else I know around here.

I have an M16A1 upper like that as well - the difference is enormous. This one from Tim LOOKS brand new, whereas my other one literally looks like it was heavily used and then just cleaned and repainted.

This new one is staying in the box for a potential M16A1 retro build someday. The other one is already on a "beater" rifle, and while it shoots great, I don't worry about treating it nicely.

One nice thing about the spray painted ones is that sometimes the paint will come off with something like carb cleaner and you have yourself an original finish early upper. My XM16E1 upper was spray painted before I cleaned it up.
